I am trying to set up a new Windows 8 desktop and the scanner USB port shows an unknown USB device. I have an older scanner - HP Scanjet 3970 and the latest driver I can find on the HP support site is for XP-x64 OS. Any way to make this work for Windows 8? I have upgraded OS to Windows 8.1 64-bit.

Says there is no support for your scanner with Windows 8 and 8.1

You can try a software called VueScan by Hamrick, i believe it is not free though but it will make your scanner work in Windows 8
Here is a link VueScan

See if anybody else here has a better solution for you,Good Luck
