ok, so im old an have the "crs"(cant remember s**t) thing goin on, i have a Gateway M685E Laptop,the screen is black, however, i can shine a flashlight into the screen and see the image. Is there any way to tell if it is the bulbs or the inverter thats gone bad?

Not without replacing one or the other, if you were to take the notebook to a local tech/tech store they would most likely advise you to replace both in any event.
