Hi Guys,

I have had a problem with the wireless internet adapter coming and going on my son's laptop.

I thought that it might be a malware problem so I posted it on the other forum. I was helped by godawgs who found several problems but after 'cleaning' the laptop the problem with the wireless internet adapter has not been resolved so he feels that it might be more of a hardware problem and he suggested that I post it here.

Here is the link to my original post:
http://www.geekstogo...eless-internet/

I'd be very grateful if you would advise me of anything that I could do to resolve this problem.

Thanks in advance

I looked at the malware thread, but I did not see where you ever listed the make and model number (full please) of the computer.

With that we should be able to find the online Users Guide and maybe Service Manual. Once we have that we can also find the drivers for the computer on the manufacturers web site. What I'd like to do is delete the existing wireless connection and drivers then reinstall it and see if that helps. It would be best to have already downloaded the wireless driver first though.

Id all else fails, you could try replacing the wireless card, but again, I need to know the make and model number first.

The Driver Download page is here: http://support.fujit...upportsearch.do

The wireless is Atheros. Click on WLAN (Atheros) on the above page. Download and save on your hard drive.

Open Device Manager (Press Windows key + R, type devmgmt.msc and press Enter).
Expand Network Adapters.
Right click on Atheros wireless device and select Uninstall. If offered, uninstall the driver as well.
Reboot.
Open Computer and navigate to where you saved the Atheros WLAN driver. Double click on it to start the install. You may need to reboot when done.

See how things are after that.

You could also try booting to Safe Mode with Networking and see how things run. Test for a long enough time to be sure the problem does or does not occur. Post results please.

Hi,

I followed your instruction with the exception of saving it to my hard drive, I had an 'administrator function only' message come up so I saved it to my desktop instead.

It initially worked but as soon as the laptop went into hibernation it crashed and I lost the signal. For the next couple of times that I turned the laptop on and off, the wireless signal icon was still there and the wireless adapter was showing in the device manager but it couldn't connect to my broadband (first a yellow star followed by a red star over the wireless task bar icon).

Now it has completely disappeared again although when the laptop is booting up the wireless icon briefly appears with the blue Windows 'thinking' circle over it before defaulting back to the Local Area Connection icon.

I get the same results in safe mode as well.

I think it's time to replace the wireless card in the laptop. It might be a good idea to take it to a repair shop to have them do it. I found a video on Youtube and you have to pretty much completely disassemble the laptop to change the wireless card.

See here: How to disassemble a Fujitsu Lifebook A series Notebook

At around 7:10 into the video he briefly mentions the wireless card when he disconnects the antenna. Once you have it out you can order a replacement.

According to the Users Guide, you have: Wireless LAN: Integrated Atheros XSPAN 802.11bgn (AR5B95-F)so you would need a new equivalent.

I'm not sure that I'd tackle this task personally after watching the video but thank you for researching it for me.

Taking it to a repair shop to get the wireless card would probably cost as much as buying a new laptop over here!

If I bought a USB wireless card would it work and would I have to disable the inbuilt one first?

Thanks for your advice.

Yes, a USB wireless adapter would work. Probably not necessary to disable the onboard wireless but I'd do it anyway.

Any chance you can borrow one from a fr4iend or family member to try first?

Buy it somewhere that will take it back if it doesn't make a difference. Here in the US, Walmart will take anything back :)

There are so many different ones, would you be able to narrow the perimeters for me a little bit please and give me some advice as to which ones would suit the laptop?

I've a bit of an update - we had the 'can't come out of hibernation' message yet again shortly followed by a blue screen message saying that 'the system encountered an uncorrectable hardware error'.

I rebooted and it seems to be okay ATM plus the wireless adapter is back again!

My question now is could the wireless adapter problem actually be a hardware fault?
