Transcend Back up Drive Fails to Back up

Best Answer 123Runner , 25 January 2014 - 07:57 AM

I use SyncBack Free for backing up my drives, folders, and files. It does a really great job. The nice thing about Syncback is that the files and folders can be looked at via windows explorer. You... Go to the full post »

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium and I want to backup my files using Transcend StoreJet 1TB external drive. I am using the Backup and Restore function on Windows 7 to do the backup. This worked once many months ago, but has not worked since. Windows will give me an error message saying the backup was unsuccessful. It will ask me if I want to try again, and when I do, I get the same unsuccessful results. I contacted Transcend Tech Support and they are stymied on this problem and suggested that I contact Microsoft to resolve this. I did convert the flies on the Transcend external drive to NTFS at the suggestion of Transcend, but that did nothing to resolve this problem.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, however I would still like to use the Transcend external drive, otherwise it becomes a very expensive paperweight. Any suggestions for that? Both my PC manufacturer (HP) and Microsoft will charge for support and the price is almost the full price of the external drive itself!

You can select an external drive as the backup destination. In fact, if your Transcend is plugged in and on when you run EaseUS, the software will probably have already chosen it as the the most suitable destination location by default.

Hi,

EaseUS Todo Backup is a good solution but Windows features stop working like that could be an indication of other problems...
Maybe there is some clue about the problem in Windows Event Viewer.

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.
Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options:
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply.

Hi,

Let's do some checking and get another log please...

» Check Windows System files integrity
  • open the Command Prompt as Administrator (Tutorial)
  • type the following command and press Enter:
    sfc /scannow

Note: This may take some time to finish.

if it doesn't say "No integrity violations found" them do this:
  • In the command prompt window, type or Copy & Paste the following:
    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt
  • Close the command prompt.
  • Attach to your post the sfcdetails.txt file that was just placed on your Desktop
  • You can safely delete the sfcdetails.txt file afterwards if you like

» Check some windows critical services...
Download Farbar Service Scanner
  • Run FSS
  • Check all the options
  • click Scan

Post the generated log in your reply.

Unfortunately, the tutorial to run Cmd Prompt as an Administrator did not work. Command Prompt came up the same way as it always does: NOT as an Administrator. The Tutorial mentioned that the User Account Control dialog would pop up. This also did not happen. So I could not run the scans except for this one:

The EaseUS worked and backed up my files on the Transcend external drive. This would seem to me that the Transcend drive is not the problem, which means something in Windows 7 is not working properly.

Hi,

To make the system more secure you should enable the User Account Control (UAC)

  • Open the Start Menu Posted Image
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Click the View by drop-down arrow and select Large icons.
  • Click User Accounts.
  • Click Change User Account Settings.
  • Move the slider:
    • Set to Always Notify to turn UAC ON
    • Click OK
  • Restart your computer.

Make sure the disk you are backing up your data to is healthy. Run a chkdsk on the drive and make sure there are no bad sectors or some sort of corruption in the file system. If there is, the backup can fail.

If you are backing up folders that contain files that might trigger your anti-virus software by mistake, this will cause the backup to fail. I have seen this happen multiple times with Microsoft Security Essentials. Just exclude the files in question from the anti-virus program and then the backup will run. Of course make sure these are legitimate files first before you do it.

Make sure system protection is turned on. You can do this by going into the System control panel and then clicking on system properties. Then you can enable system protection for the different drives in your computer.

How to fix Error code: 0x81000037 when using Windows 7’s Backup and Restore

Support.MIcrosoft.com > The backup process requires significantly more time when you use the Windows Backup utility in Windows 7 if the size of the backup files increases

If you love your data, do not use Windows Backup!

I changed the UAC settings, but I am still getting the same results when I try to run Cmd Prompt as an Administrator. The UAC still doesn't pop up, either.

I have 2014 Norton 360 for AV and am running a full scan, including the Transcend drive now. I changed the settings so the bad files will be removed instead of quarantined.
Is there a free back up software I can use in place of W7 Backup and Restore?
I would like to do backups on a regular weekly schedule.

You can use EaseUS Todo Backup suggested before.

With the UAC disabled everything will run as Administrator if I'm not mistaken, try to run the sfc scan because your Windows have some problems and sfc will try to fix them.
