the windows update wants me to install approx 100 new updates.

Should I go ahead and install all of these updates?

YES, definitively.

Windows XP is an old Operating System and after Service Pack 3 Microsoft released several updates you have to install to make the system more secure and to fix some problems.

When you start installing programs they will add some Microsoft .Net Framework and after that expect to see windows update offering even more updates.

An in case you don't know Microsoft will end Windows XP Support on April 8th

i've never even tried windows vista, let alone another OS...lol

Well you can forget Vista as it doesn't have very good reputation, Windows 7 is better and fixed several problems found on Vista.
And for those who like it, there is Windows 8 now...

i have an old program that i use called sidekick 98...i haven't upgraded because i don't think that program will work on those OS's...

It seems so only with Windows 7 Pro and Windows XP Mode...

Ok, cool, thanks, I went to the Tek-Tip.com website and I guess it does with with Win8.

I may have to buy a new compute now, this one is about 10 years old...:-)
