Odd happenings with 'select text' - what's happening?

For the past 5 months of 10 years of using, on all 4 of my computers when I select the whole page of text, Ctrl A, (for less glare), after 1 or 2 minutes the blue screen vanishes so back to the original screen.

However if I move the cursor to any edge of the screen the selection blue colour returns! How can I fix this glitch please?

Also just a couple of days ago the blue selection colour is now washed out to light blue so the contrast between colour and text is diminished.

Any advice please - thanks.
