Hello Geekstogo Community!

I am a new user on this forum.

I decided to post on this forum because I found the following topic to be about a problem very closely related to that which I am experiencing:

http://www.geekstogo...stall-anything/

I have been trouble trying to install some software. It started when I tried to install drivers for an old printer and had to go looking for drivers for Windows 7. I am running Windows 7 Pro. I have also tried installing WinZip and TuneUp Utilities 2014 as a test to no avail. All that happens is that the 'egg timer' (now a spinning circle next to the cursor/pointer) appears for a few seconds as does the program in Task Manager but then, after a few seconds, the task disappears and so does the spinning circle and nothing more happens.

I have disabled Windows Firewall and tried installing with AVG also disabled, including after a 'Clean Boot'. Disabled UAC. Installed all updates as I thought it might have something to do with the .NET Framework missing. No joy. Tried installing .NET Framework 4 using a separate installer and it verified that I have the same or newer version already installed. I tried 2 installers for .NET from different sources and for some reason one runs and the other doesn't.

I have tried sfc /scannow and I have tried System Restore and Windows Repair utility. The same thing also happens in Safe Mode. I have played with the Registry Editor somewhat, following instructions in various Microsoft.com knowledge databases but NOTHING WORKS.

The strange thing is, I HAVE been able to install some programs, such as Java and Adobe Flash Player and Acrobat Reader.

The only thing I can think of now having looked at the topic on this forum to which I have referred above is to post the results of the Event Viewer log for a couple of occasions where I've tried and failed to run an installer, so here goes (these were all marked 'Error'/Source: 'Application Error'):

And I wonder if this could be relevant(?). This was marked 'Error'/Source: 'WMI':
[start result]
Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.
[end result]

I am somewhat 'au fait' with troubleshooting problems and researching possible solutions but this one has me stumped. Hopefully I have skipped many steps in this daunting and tedious process.

I look forward to a response and thank you for your help in anticipation.

Many thanks,

Luke.

Hi Luke :welcome:

Let's see what we can find, I would like you to run sfc again and know exactly if it finds problems or not.

» Check Windows System files integrity
  • open the Command Prompt as Administrator (Tutorial)
  • type the following command and press Enter:
    sfc /scannow

Note: This may take some time to finish.

if it doesn't say "No integrity violations found" them do this:
  • In the command prompt window, type or Copy & Paste the following:
    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt
  • Close the command prompt.
  • Attach to your post the sfcdetails.txt file that was just placed on your Desktop
  • You can safely delete the sfcdetails.txt file afterwards if you like

» Minitoolbox log
Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.
Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options:
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices (Only Problems)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
  • List Restore Points
Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply.

» Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) log
Let's check some windows critical services...
Download Farbar Service Scanner and save the file to the Desktop.
  • Run FSS
  • Check all the options
  • click Scan
Post the generated log in your reply.

Can you run Windows Updates check for new updates and install them without errors?

Hi SleepyDude,

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I have done as you asked.

To answer your last question first: Yes, I can check for updates and install them but not entirely without problems. They will install eventually but a few fail to install the first time, I do a reboot and then some more install and so on (it took maybe 3 or 4 attempts to get them all installed); I figured this might be normal because some updates cannot install before others have been installed and the computer has been rebooted.

Also, I ran the System File Checker again, just in case, and again there were no violations - I failed to mention that in my first post, apologies for that.

Hi,

Do you have any pending updates now?

On of the errors presented in the logs is related to Microsoft .NET Framework 4 and many programs depends on that, the problem is documented by Microsoft and they provide some fixing steps, go to this page and follow Method 1 and Method 2

After this restart the computer, search for new windows updates and try to install the critical ones.

Is this a new Windows installation? If not by any change did you uninstall one of those Trial antivirus installed by the computer manufacture?

Hello SleepyDude,

Thanks for your reply.

The only update available is an Optional Update, which is not needed: Intel - Network - Intel® 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection.

.NET Framework is installed and I too thought it might be causing the issues but the 2 fixes you suggested haven't fixed the problem. I did everything you suggested including restarting the computer and checking for new updates (which there were none) and I still cannot run the installers.

Another problem I am encountering is within Internet Explorer. When I click download and then click Run the dialog says: "The signature of MicrosoftFixit50123.msi is corrupt or invalid." Surely a program downloaded from Microsoft cannot have something wrong with the signature - it's got to be something to do with my Windows / IE and might be related to the installation issues I'm having. However, when I Save and then Run the program, it works.

I will say again - there are no problems installing updates and all critical updates have been installed.

The Windows installation was fresh. It has a free version of AVG Antivirus 2014 on it and I haven't tried to uninstall it, or any other program for that matter.

Do you perhaps want me to uninstall .NET Framework and then reinstall it again (Method 3 on the Microsoft.com webpage)?

Also - .NET Framework Repair Tool saved various logs to my PC - do you need to see these?

Thanks again,

Luke.

It could be a bad download or some disk corruption, let's check that...

  • open the Command Prompt as Administrator (Tutorial)
  • type the command:
    chkdsk /r /x C:
Note: When it ask if you want to checked the volume next time the system restarts answer Yes
  • restart the computer. The Disk check will take some time to finish...

Next,
  • download ListChkdskResult
  • execute the file and accept all the windows prompts to authorize the program to run
  • Notepad will open with a report showing the chkdsk result
  • copy & paste the log to your reply

Hello,

I did as you asked. The chkdsk took a long time to finish - 1/2 hour maybe? And I had trouble getting the ListChkdskResult to run as IE kept telling me it is not commonly downloaded and could harm my computer so the only way I could get it to work was to Save As and overwrite the first file I downloaded and then it worked.

This is the log:

Hi,

Thanks for the Check Disk log, chkdsk fixed some minor problems.

Let's check the Net Framework state...
Download .NET Framework Setup Verification Tool
- extract the file netfx_5F00_setupverifier_5F00_new.zip
- run the tool netfx_setupverifier.exe and accept the prompts
- from the drop-down combo select [/b]Net Framework version 4 Client[/b]
- click Verify now

Repeat the steps for every Net Framework you have installed.

Let me know if it passes the verification in all of them.

Hi,

How do I check exactly which versions of .NET Framework I have installed? I thought it was only the most up-to-date version (4.0). I checked the list of currently installed updates (via Control Panel -> Windows Update) and it mentions 4.0 as well as 3.5.1 - I presume this is 3.5 SP1 so I ran the verifier on that as well.

The logs from the Tool are confusing because they say that versions 1.0, 1.1 are not installed and so these products were not added to the checks but then it says 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 are 'installed with Service Pack xx' and lower down it says they were not added as they are not installed, so I don't know if I need to run checks on another version??

Anyway, both checks ended with 'Product Verification Succeeded!' - do you need to see the logs? I have saved both.

Thanks,

Luke.

Hi,

It's normal to have several versions because the last one doesn't replace the others and depending on the programs they may need a specific version.

Version 3.5.1 and 4.0 seems right if they pass validation I don't need the logs.

Lets do a cleanup...
Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista or above accept the Security Warning).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Before trying to reinstall one of those programs that didn't worked, if possible download the file again and save it to a different location that before then trying to install.

Hi there,

I ran the tool. It removed 402mb of rubbish from my computer then I restarted.

I still can't install programs.

Something else I've noticed that's strange is that when I try to run a program as Administrator it doesn't come up with the dialog box where I have to click 'Yes' - it just runs!

Still no joy :(

Thanks,

Luke.

Hi,

Sounds like you have UAC disabled...

To make the system more secure you should enable the User Account Control (UAC)

  • Open the Start Menu Posted Image
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Click the View by drop-down arrow and select Large icons.
  • Click User Accounts.
  • Click Change User Account Settings.
  • Move the slider:
    • Set to Always Notify to turn UAC ON
    • Click OK
  • Restart your computer.
