So, I'm currently cleaning out an older XP laptop riddle with malware and trojans. I'm using AVG, and have scanned the system. My question is whether I can delete objects, or only rename, and if the latter, why? Are the same items I can safely delete? How do I tell?

I ask this question mostly because an MBAM scan that I ran ended up with a BSOD on reboot. Going back to Last Known Good restored windows, so now I'm trying AVG rescue from the command line. Just not 100% on how to safely clean the system without me having to reinstall Windows.

Thanks for any help you can offer?

Hi if you can get into windows I will see what there is and assist in removing it safely

Download OTL to your Desktop
Secondary link
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.

    Posted Image
  • Select All Users
  • Select LOP and Purity
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    netsvcs
    BASESERVICES
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    c:\program files (x86)\Google\Desktop
    c:\program files\Google\Desktop
    dir "%systemdrive%\*" /S /A:L /C
    /md5start
    rpcss.dll
    /md5stop
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Attach both logs
