A computer in my office (not mine) just today caught a very nasty fake "security software" virus. I was told the last thing the user was doing when it struck was browsing the philly.com sports page. Anyway, Internet Explorer won't open, Chrome won't open, and the Task Manager automatically closes when you try to access it. Every few seconds an obviously fake "firewall alert" pops up, and it also does whenever you try to open IE or Chrome. I do not have a USB drive handy at the moment or I would try an OTL scan; I will try to have that for tomorrow morning. I may also try to email it to that user and see if I can get it from email. Will post here if successfull unless given other instructions on where to begin.

Thanks in advance; you guys here always get me out of a jam!

I copied OTL to the infected computer with a thumb drive, however the "firewall" prevents it from running, saying it may be harmful to the computer. I also found that I cannot open any files on that machine- excel files, documents, etc.

Hi there, what is the operating system on the computer ? Also is it 32 or 64 bit ?

We will need to work outside of windows for this unless you can get into safe mode

I reset into Safe Mode with networking shut off, and was able to run OTL. It is running now. I will try to get the log posted here as soon as it is done.

Windows 7, 64 bit.

Should have the log posted in a minute...

OK first priority will be to download and install this programme on the computer you are using to copy files to protect it from any infection and to check the USB you are using

Download MCShield to your desktop and install
It will initially run a scan and show the result as a toaster by the system clock
Then in the control centre select scanner and tick unhide items on flash drives
Posted Image
Plug in the drive and McShield will start a scan

Then get the log which will be here :

Start > all programs > MCShield > logs > all scans

And post that

OK now to do the sick one ...

From safe mode :

I have added the fix as a text file if you wish to use that instead...
Copy the attached fix.txt to the USB
On the sick computer run OTL and press fix, a dialogue will appear asking for the location of fix.txt
Navigate to the file on the USB and select it
Then press run fix again on OTL

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

Everything was working on that machine this morning as normal.
I installed Malwarebytes and replaced MSSE with Avast, as you recommended on my machine after getting me fixed up last fall.
Found lots of strange registry entries and cookies; MB deleted them.

I did notice some adware on the system so we may as well clear that as well, could you post the MBAM log please

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Scan.
  • After the scan is complete click on "Clean"
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
