Hi Geeks-to-Go !

I have frequent BSOD's. I have not been able to narrow down to what is causing this problem as it appears to be quite random. Sometimes I'm doing something and have several applications running and it happens, which would suggest perhaps, memory problems but sometimes I'm only typing a note in notepad/not doing much at all and it happens. Sometimes I come back to my PC to find it's had a BSOD and restarted - whilst idle! Then again, it could be caused by something running in the background.

It's a relatively old computer, running Windows 7. I believe it's an AMD 4200+ processor and it's DDR1 RAM (1.5Gb)! Please let me know if you would like to see PC spec's and what the best way to get all the info. you need is - or do you just want me to type out what hardware/operating system I'm using?

Also, I've seen people post their last 10 minidump files - what is the utility I use to access these files so I can post the contents?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks in advance,

Luke.

Hello Tyskie

Download then run Speccy and post the resultant url for us, details here

If crash dumps are enabled on your computer you will find them at c:\windows\minidump
If there are ten dump files available upload them to here and then post the url with your next reply.

Hi phillpower2,

Thanks for your quick reply!

Without further ado: Speccy result.

Minidump files - there were 9 other, older minidump files, let me know if you would like to see these.

Thanks,

Luke.

Hello Tyskie

Three things of note in the various crash dumps, the USB port/s driver/s are a constant presence but IE and Kaspersky are also listed, the USB aspect includes not only a possible driver issue but also a problem with a device connected to a USB port.

1: ASUS does not list any Windows 7 drivers for your MB so see if Drivermax suggests any newer USB drivers than what you have;

Run DriverMax to see if any driver updates are suggested.

Please note that you are only allowed to download two drivers a day for free and be sure to uncheck the “install AVG
toolbar” option box.
If driver updates are available for your USB ports and chipset or SMBus please update them first.

Remember to always create a new restore point before updating any drivers.

2: Uninstall Kaspersky and install either Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials (both are free), if Kaspersky is a paid for product please make a note of the licence key before you uninstall it, this in case you wish to reinstall it again later, be sure to use the correct uninstaller tool that is available from here

Hi pp2,

This may take a while if I can only do 2 at a time. I have attached a list of the drivers required. Could you please tell me what order I should download them in? Or is there a quicker way to get them all (apart from paying for the Pro license)?

Also, I couldn't see an option to 'Create a Restore Point', only to restore to a previous point.

Many thanks,

Luke,

When you go to install a driver it will always ask you if you want to create a restore point first. That is always recommended in case of a problem.

Hello Luke

DriverMax has identified 18 out of date drivers but your screenshot shows only 13, can I just confirm that the additional 5 out of date drivers are the +1 and the +4 and not a seperate list of 5 drivers.

Of the list that you have included only update the wireless USB card for now and advise us of the other 5 driver updates that DriverMax identified.

Have you done this.

Hi Ron, thanks for the info.

Hello phill! I have uninstalled KIS using the removal tool (do you wish to see the log?) and installed MSE.

I confirm that the other 5 drivers are the +1 and +4 and when I expand these it shows (#1) (#2) (#3) and so on for the same item.

I have installed the USB Wireless LAN Card driver.

Thanks,

Luke.

Hello Luke

Have you checked the Device Manager to see if there are any yellow ! or red X marks against the USB host controller/s or USB root hub/s.

Do you have any devices connected to the computer using the USB ports, if yes let us know what they are, disconnect it/them and see if the computer crashes while in normal use

Hi phill,

I have attached a screenshot of my Device Manager. 2 devices do not have drivers installed and 1 is disabled. From memory I don't think I could find drivers for them. Not sure if they relate to USB as it's in the 'Other' category.

Currently I have a HP P1102W wireless printer connected to a USB port and a wireless adapter connected to another USB port. These are the only 2 devices connected via USB.

Please let me know which, if any, I should disconnect because I can't really be without either to be able to work on this PC as there isn't a feasible way of getting an Ethernet cable in my room. If you need me to disconnect them then I will probably have to use a laptop for a while but then that kind of invalidates the test because it won't be performed under normal conditions as I won't be using the PC.

How do you wish me to proceed?

Thanks,

Luke.

Okay... well I won't be able to do this for a while because it's my work PC and I simply can't do what you've asked of me without getting another PC/laptop as the BSOD's are sometimes 4-6 days apart and I can't be without an internet connection or a printer for that long.

I will come back to you when I can.

To see if we can identify any driver conflicts please refer to the details below provided courtesy of jcgriff2

1. Create a Windows System Restore Point -
Vista - START | type rstrui - create a restore point
Windows 7 - START | type create | select "Create a Restore Point"
Windows 8/ 8.1 - Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows*8) | HP® Support

2. Run Driver Verifier -
- Windows 7 & Vista - START | type verifier
- Windows 8.1 & 8 - Press WIN +X keys | select "Command Prompt (Admin)" | type verifier

Make these selections -
1. Select 2nd option - Create custom settings (for code developers)
2. Select 2nd option - Select individual settings from a full list
3. Check these boxes -
▪ Special Pool
▪ Pool Tracking
▪ Force IRQL checking
▪ Deadlock Detection
▪ Security Checks (new as of Windows 7)
▪ Concurrency Stress Test (new as of Windows 8)
▪ DDI compliance checking (new as of Windows 8)
▪ Miscellaneous Checks
4. Select last option - Select driver names from a list
5. Click on the Provider heading - sorts list by Provider
6. Check ALL boxes where "Microsoft" IS NOT the Provider
7. Click on Finish
8. Re-boot[/HIDE]

- If the Driver Verifier (DV) finds a violation, it will result in a BSOD

- After re-start, you may not be able to log on to normal Windows
... • Boot into SAFEMODE - tap the F8 key repeatedly during boot-up
... • Select "System Restore"
... • Choose the restore point that you created in step #1

- For Driver Verifier status
--- select last option, 1st screen -or-
--- type verifier /query (in a cmd/DOS screen)
- To turn Driver Verifier off - verifier /reset then re-boot

- The Driver Verifier needs to run as long as possible - even if the status screen appears clear.
- All future BSOD dumps must be VERIFIER_ENABLED_MINIDUMPs - otherwise the dump(s) are of no use

If your system does BSOD while the Driver Verifier is running, please retrieve the dump file from c:\windows\minidump and attach it to your next reply.
