Hi Guys,

My husband wanted to download Itunes but he went onto Itunes.windownload.net instead of Apple which has caused endless problems.

I have found the following:

Conduit.search - This changed my internet connections to a proxy server (I have changed it back and changed the Google/Internet Explorer settings)
Searchscope - This has appeared in the OTL log but I cannot find it anywhere else on the PC
Bubbledock - I have deleted this.
Browsersafeguard - this was picked up as a PUP by MBAM and quarantined but not sure why?
Avast keeps picking up random actions such as 'a browser extension is trying to attach to Google' and not being able to scan for the Browser Clean Up but these have been intermittent. Also on the software Updater Adobe Reader is stuck on 'preparing' even though I've downloaded the latest version.
Windows defender hasn't scanned since 19/1/14 even though it should scan daily. I ran a scan but nothing was found.

I have done a MBAM scan which picked up 28 PUPs and quarantined these.
I have run Avast both in quick scan and boot scan - nothing found.
I have run AdwCleaner which found several corrupt entries in the registry - cleaned.

I'd appreciate any help with this as I'm not convinced that the PC is clean

Hi not a great deal showing now, have you run AdwCleaner ? As I can see it on your system. Browserprotect alas does not as it is an adware programme

Your Chrome homepage and search will need to be reset manually

If you wish I can show you how to set Avast to block PUP's

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    Posted Image
:Commands
[CREATERESTOREPOINT]

:OTL
IE - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings: "ProxyOverride" = <-loopback>
IE - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings: "ProxyServer" = http=127.0.0.1:49163;https=127.0.0.1:49163

O16 - DPF: {7530BFB8-7293-4D34-9923-61A11451AFC5} http://download.eset...lineScanner.cab (Reg Error: Key error.)

:Files
C:\Program Files (x86)\Browsersafeguard

:Commands
[resethosts]
[emptytemp]
[Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

How is the computer behaving ? For the software updater, if you have installed the latest version then click refresh
[attachment=69216:Capture.PNG]

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator" the tool will open and start scanning your system
  • please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

Avast has updated itself now but the software updater is the same as before. I do have the latest version and I have refreshed.

I also have Bubble Dock in my Notifications Area Icons in the control panel.

Download the small VBS script from here https://dl.dropboxus...ation-items.vbs to your desktop
Right click the VBS and select run as administrator.
This will reset the notification area, as you use programmes they will repopulate :)

I will check on the Avast forum how to resolve that and will be back soon

How is the computer behaving now ?

Sorry but the link does not seem to be working - I just get script up....

The PC seems to be okay now except the the fonts are really big on Google but that's something that I can adjust back.

Save as done but I could only open it, not run as administrator but it came up with 'customize notifications dialog cleared'.

Hope that's okay?

Bubble Dock is gone :-)

The PC seems fine other than the large text font and the Adobe Reader thing on Avast but if you think that it's clear then that's fine

A possible solution to the Avast problem is to run a repair :

Go Control Panel > Programs and Features
Select Avast and a menu will appear on the left
Select repair and once completed reboot and see if it is fixed

Subject to no further problems :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Download and run Delfix

: Keep Java Updated :

WARNING: Java is the #1 exploited program at this time. The Department of Homeland Security recommends that computer users disable Java
See this article and this article.
I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser and How to unplug Java from the browser)

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

CryptoPrevent install this programme to lock down and prevent crypto ransome ware

Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

I've ran Delfix, downloaded CryptoPrevent and uninstalled Java.

I have attempted to repair Avast but it is still stuck on 'preparing' version 10.1.8.24 even though I have version 11.0.06 installed on the PC.

Other than that, all seems fine :-)

Would you like me to email Avast support about this as it's their product?

Thanks for your help

There is one other solution to this and that is to uninstall the software updater part and then re-install after a reboot

I can walk you through that

Again using control panel select Avast
This time click change

[attachment=69230:Capture.PNG]

Then remove the tick from Software updater

[attachment=69231:Capture1.PNG]

Click continue and reboot

Then to reinstall the software updater just reverse the step and add a tick

Thank-you! All fixed now

You've been a star as usual, thanks again!

I've made a deal with my SO - he washes my car once a week and I clean his laptop - sorted!:-)
