Gday.

That's great news you got it sorted.   Did you do a Clean Install?

Tips.

Create your restore disks now as you have the OS updated.

Try to have as few  applications as possible staring with windows i.e. Office, iTunes.

As you install each program, look under preference/options/help, prevent them from starting with Windows, I also stop Auto update as well.   Exceptions, Firewall, Security and Anti Virus software.

I advice against using Reg cleaner, optimization programs, they are mostly smoke and mirrors and some can damage the system.

When you have things as you like, remember to create a image of the OS drive using windows built in tool.

Gday.

Did you do a Clean Install?

No, I used the non-destructive re-install in the guide you linked to, but my success at the bank's site was short-lived. The only things I did over the 24 hours after my last post were re-installing my Avast (the Windows re-install caused changes to it that made it not run), running MBAM, Avast, and SuperAntiSpyware scans (nothing found), installing foobar2000 (my preferred audio player), moving my music folder contents (about 10 gigs of mp3s) and Then about 36 hours after I finished the Windows re-install, the same problems started happening at the bank website. One new wrinkle is that in addition to the original error screen I had always seen when the glitch happened before, I'm sometimes now seeing a different error screen with the 404 not found error message.

Another irksome discovery was that due to my stupidity regarding the space allocation for Restore Points, I had wiped out the System Restores I had made previously which might have helped me discover what, if anything, I had done to cause the glitch to return. I've fixed the Restore space allowance, though. Kicked it up to a good 50 gigs just to be safe since I have room to spare.

I got off work a little early today and decided to try and duplicate the initial success I had following that guide, but all I did was waste a good 4 hours. I tried going online to my bank with every iteration of Internet Explorer just like I did last time, but the glitch was there from the very beginning this time. Ugh.

Now I'm wondering what to try next. I don't know if you think I should try a completely clean install or not. I was reading up on all this install/re-install/repair/backup/restore stuff, and I wondered how you felt about possibly wiping the drive clean and using some cloning/imaging utility to just copy the old drive to the new one. I'm just grasping at straws at this point, and as soon as you run out of ideas the only thing I can think to do is try asking for help from someone on the software side of things.

I've been checking my old hard drive (the one that's dying-but-not-dead-yet) once a day at least, and it still has absolutely zero problems on the bank website. I've kept all the important updates current on that drive also (Windows, malware scan program definitions, etc.).

Let's try this first.

I have recently seen people having problems with the latest version of Avast, blocking some servers like your Bank's, could also explain the 404 Error.   Are you running an older version of Avast on the old HDD?

Try uninstalling Avast, not just disabling, try the bank again.

Hi again.

I was indeed using a slightly older program version of avast on my old drive (6 months or so? ), so I got a copy of that version's installer, uninstalled the newer avast, installed the older avast, and still have the same problem. Tried logging in about 5 times at my bank, and it crapped out every time at some point in the login process. Got the bank website's "Your transaction did not complete...." message four times and the

Server Error

404 - File or directory not found.

The resource you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

message once.

While you are thinking of any other ideas for testing the glitch, what do you think of my installing a second browser to see if the bank would work that way? If you think it would be all right to try, what secondary browser do you recommend? Most people I know personally use Firefox aside from IE, but I've also heard some good things anecdotally about Chrome. I've never used anything besides IE, so I have no experience.

Thanks.

Possible the problem is not with Avast.  You could completely uninstall it, enable the windows firewall,  and try again to the bank.

Is the IE version the same on both drives?

I use Chrome as my default browser , built in filters have stopped loading od bad sites on occasions. Some extensions added,

Hi again.

IE is the same version on both hard drives. Superantispyware and Avast virus definitions, Windows Updates, Flash and Java should all be the same as well. Not 100% sure, but the Superantispyware program version # might be different on the old drive the same way Avast was.

Uninstalled Avast, tried the bank website again with IE 11, and no joy. Similar errors at seemingly random points. Re-installed Avast.

Installed Chrome (bare bones- no apps), imported my Favorites, tried the bank site, and it works fine. Navigated around the site, logged out and back in several times. Closed and reopened Chrome several times also. Zero problems just like with the old hard drive.

It's a nice temporary workaround, but I still want to fix whatever's making my bank website wonky with IE 11 on this new drive.

So looks like a IE setting is the problem,   Please try accessing your bank after each step.

Restart the computer, > Enter the BIOS, > check the time/date/ and if present, language and location, > Press F10 to save setting and exit.  On the desktop, check Time and Date are correct.

****************************************

Click the Start button, type Internet Explorer in the search box, and then, in the list of results, > click Internet Explorer.

In Internet Explorer, > click Tools, and then > click Internet Options.

> Click the Content tab, and then > click Clear SSL state. > click Apply

Close the browser then reopen.

Ok, BIOS time/date are correct, and no settings for language/location. Desktop time/date also correct.

Did the "Clear SSL State", closed/reopened IE 11, and the bank site is still having the problem.

I think it best now time to open a new topic as I am now guessing a fix, > http://www.geekstogo...sers-and-email/

I would head it, Cannot access bank using IE.   Please give a link back to this topic and say relevant info is from reply #56.

Also post here a link to the new Topic so we can follow what is happening.

Good luck.

Hi again. Sorry for the delay, but I had a gazillion things needed doing this weekend.

Believe it or not, I may have accidentally stumbled upon what I did wrong to cause the bank site problem. It's something you almost helped find just recently when you told me to check the Date/Time on my MB and Desktop. If I'd been more thorough following your instructions and checked all the Desktop Time/Date Settings, I would have noticed it then. About 6 hours ago I saw that my Desktop clock was off by 2 hours. Couldn't understand why, but I fixed it. Then I googled clock resetting. One of the things mentioned to check when your clock resets itself is if your Time Zone is correct. I couldn't imagine why mine wasn't (don't you have to select that during the Windows 7 installation at some point?) , but I checked it anyway. My Time Zone was set for US Pacific, not US Central like it should have been. I have no idea if I selected that in error at some point, or if it was changed somehow, or if it was default and I never selected my Time Zone or whatever.

Then it hit me: could that have been the problem with the bank? A Time Zone discrepancy? So, I went online and tried logging in at my bank. It worked. I tried all the jumping around links, opening sub-windows, logging out and back in, exiting IE and reopening, logging back in at the bank again. Over the last 6 hours or so I've logged in successfully about once every hour. I've used the Restart on my PC, I've Shut Down twice ( 5 mins, and 30 mins), and so far I haven't had a single error message at he bank.

Now I know I've celebrated prematurely before with this problem, so I'm not going to declare victory just yet. I'm going to give this a few days, or possibly a week to see if that really was all it was. If you don't hear back from me sooner, I'll probably post back here in a week or so to let you know it's still working. Oh, and I did create a new Restore Point just few minutes ago.

Frakking Time Zone... :bashhead:

That's good news, saves diagnosing on the other Forum   Amazing that such a minor setting could cause problems.

Oh, and I did create a new Restore Point just few minutes ago.

A restore Point is good, but if you feel things are OK, create another image of the drive.    If in the future you have problems and are unable to repair the computer, you can (after backing up your Data) restore the image, giving you a working system.

Hope not to see you for a week.

Hi again.

Everything seems to be working fine now. I also discovered that disabling  SATA3 in the UEFI stopped that odd "can't detect any device" line on one of my boot screens.

So, I did a new backup to the USB, and I've continued moving files and reinstalling programs on the new hard drive. Whenever I feel like there's nothing left to do, I'll make another USB backup and mothball the old drive. I've got until the end of the year on the warranty, so I'm going to hold onto it just in case of any emergency with the new one.

Thanks a ton. :)
