I am kind of confused. When I go to start, rt. click properties, all I see is XP Service pack 3. It does not say 64 bit anywhere that I can see. I would like to keep updates coming dating to keep XP running safely longer, not necessarily update to Win 8 on this computer. So do I proceed with the link to upgrade, even if I doubt this computer will handle Windows 8?


Afraid to proceed downloading something that might stall out the computer. While I think I will be buying a new computer soon, I still wish to keep the old one running because of a slideshow program that it has, plus all the music and pictures that are stored on it too.

Keep using it. Apply updates until they are no longer offered. Make sure you anti-virus is up to date. Be careful what you click on.

No more updates does not make XP unusable. What you are exposed to is future malware, that's why you need a good AV program and you need to keep it updated.

Many XP system are not suitable to upgrade to Windows 7 or 8. This is a good excuse to buy a new computer though

Thanks so much guys!! There was a feeling of a doomsday something like the Y2K scare years ago about XP. Do you mean don't click on any updates that you are not sure that come from Microsoft?

My antivirus program comes with my IP provider. It is probably not the best, but at least I can call them and get questions answered, unlike other programs out there.

When supports ends, there will be no updates for XP from Microsoft at. I think you will probable see heaps of offers to support or protect your XP system from third parties and are likely to be some sort of scam, so be very wary. Keep your eye open for more news/articles on the Net.

Got it. I guess a person should ignore all update offers that come to you then. Which makes me wonder, what do you do about Java and Flash player updates? Just ignore them too?

You must update all the programs on your computer, like Java, Flash, Office, Virus Protection, everything but the Microsoft Xp Operating System.
