Hi Bettei,

I am not sure what exactly was on this installation CD, was it just for the Epson Printers or both Scanner and Printer.? All i knew is it was for Windows XP Printer software and is not compatible with Windows 8.1.

From your 1st post. Now that i reread it you never mentioned you had a driver or software for this Epson Scanner before, unless it is on this CD you mentioned.

So my recommendation was to remove, uninstall,  this software and driver, then proceed to install the Epson 2400 Scanner software and driver (Windows 7 64bit one) from the Epson's site.

Self extracting i mean it will have a option through the software itself to be able to unzip it in Windows 8.1, then you can proceed with the installation of the software.

Then you plug in the Scanner, it should tell you, you need to restart the PC.

Yes sometimes support from a manufacturer are not always helpful, this is when you need to research it yourself, google it a good resource.

I was never told what models of the Printers you had to help you with that also.

I was the same as you not much knowledge of computers, but i learned as i went along with it for many years and with many trial and errors.Hope i can help you out more.

I uninstalled everything that said Epson, set a restore point and started over.  It took quite a while to download, but when it was finished, it put 5 different files in my downloads.   I unzipped everything, it said it was unzipped and installed correctly.  The Epson printer icons appear on my desktop.  But when i plug in the usb cable, and try to open the printer scan icon, it says it does not recognize the usb port.  I even restarted the computer with the usb cord plugged in.  Troubleshooting assistant pops up, but that is all.    Thought I would post one more time to see if I did something wrong before I ditch this project as a lost cause.

Thanks for your time!

Bettei,

What are these 5 different files? How many printers are you trying to install at once? Epson Perfection 2400 photo scanner is 14mb http://www.epson.com...form=OSF_W_7-64 Should not take long to download, unless you are doing many at a time, which is not usually possible here or you have Dial-up. Always install first, then when asked to connect to USB port, then you do. Install one Device at a time, making sure it works before doing another.

Check Device manager when installing, see if a yellow exclamation point next to, imaging device, Printer and universal Serial Bus controllers.

I have no idea which Printer or Printers Models you are trying to install. So i can help more.

You know you can, besides doing a restore from a system restore point, Windows 8.1 can do a reset or refresh, might help you, but you will looose anything you installed ater you bought the computer.

If you want instructions on how to do this, let me know.

Otherwise, try one step at a time, give more information on Printers you are also trying to install, if they are compatible. Is this the right scanner, here it is questionable, but works on my Windows 8.1 64 bit with software i linked you    http://www.microsoft...sid=Windows 8.1

You can check your old printers or software here for compatibility ,but to me this is mostly by people who have tried i believe, not Microsoft.

I do have the Perfection 2400, and it was the only Epson printer I have, the only one I was trying to install at the time.  I do have a small HP printer hooked up, but that one installed just fine last week.  I have a slow DSL line, and it took quite a while to download the Epson files.  In my downloads it shows, Epson 12180 (1)Epson 12180 (2) Epson 12180 (3) Epson 12180, and Epson 13552.  Again, this is the only Epson device I own, so it has to be for this printer, and I only clicked on the driver update for win 7 64 bit once.  Don't know why so many different Epson downloads are showing there.

Just now, I plugged in the USB cord to the Epson, and looked at the device manager.  The yellow exclamation point flashed for a second for the Epson printer, then went away.  So I tried to turn on the scanner like I normally would, by going to the desktop icon and clicking on it to let you know exactly what error messages I am now getting so I can tell you what it said.  And eureka, it worked!  Did not work yesterday when I tried it many times, but this morning it did.  I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will continue to work.

Thanks for you time!!

I am pleased to hear that the issue is now resolved and I am certain that jd will also be

May I suggest the following;

That you create a new restore point so that your present settings are saved.

That you burn all your present drivers to disk or save them to a USB device such as a thumb drive.

That you create a Windows 8.1 Backup and Recovery disk, details to help you with this are available from here

Please do one of the above asap.

Thanks, but now that presents another problem!   How do I go about burning all my drivers to a disk?  I didn't know you could do that?

Hey Bettei

Hey Phill

Glad to hear the Epson Scanner is working. The file Epson 12180 is the file for the Epson Perfection 2400 Scanner, only one needed.

Why don't you just back-up the file (s)  (zip files) , all that is needed to do, make it simpler. Use a USB flash drive. I back-up all my stuff on an External Hard Drive, i find this best for me to have since i have alot of files to back-up.  I feel a flash drive is best for this , JUST copy and paste it, IT'S done!

Definitely create a restore point any time you install anything, before and after you know it works for awhile.

This is what you should see when you open up your scanner software. Should be choses for Full Mode,Auto Mode and Home Mode, however you prefer.

You are Welcome, if there is anything else, please ask. :spoton:

I just went to my downloads and sent those Epson files to a cd and burned them that way.  Hope that it works.  I am going from an XP computer to 8.1, and now that the scanner is running I assume it is ok to delete the things in the "downloads" columns now?  I don't recall having those saved like that in XP.  I always like to ask before deleting.

I use the scanner in home mode also, and have scanned hundreds of old slides with it, even old negatives.  I am glad I can use it with the new computer.   I kept my pictures and music backed up on an external hard drive on the XP computer, will probably do the same with this new one.  Another thing that did not work was the Maxtor hard drive with new computer.  Tried to update that also, but new computer will not read it, so will figure out something.  I just hope that downloading pictures with 8.1 will be as easy as they were with XP.  I dislike learning new things!  Thanks!

JDS63:

O.k., but if you had a flash drive, been so much easier to do and retrieve from it. Assume the CD will be fine.

If you are sure they are backed up, yes it is o.k. to delete it in the download folder, no use for 2 of them, besides you can always download them again.

Been so long since Windows XP for me i can't quite recall, but Windows Vista,7 and 8 have them always go to downloads, unless you change this.

Download managers are good to have also.

Epson Perfection 2400 is an older Scanner, but it does work well, i still like it and am glad i can still use it too.

You are talking about a Maxtor USB External Drive or Internal Drive? Most drives shouldn't be a problem, Windows 8.1 will use generic drivers to work them.

No need for software, unless you want automatic back-up features in an external drive.

Again downloading, pictures, movies, music and documents will default to Downloads folder so no issues in Win 8, very easy.

Learning new things keeps the mind working and growing, never too old to learn, remember that, be patient. Your Welcome,Bettei, ANYTIME!
