My nephew’s laptop HD is fried. My question is, can it be replace with any compatible HD or does it have to be an specific one to the laptop’s brand. If so, how can I find the right one?
His laptop is an asus x54c……

According to a web page search, the drive is a "320.0 GB - Serial ATA-300 - 5400.0 rpm". So, as long as the size is correct and it is a serial ATA-300 or faster, it would be fine.

You can go with a hard drive or a SSD.

An example would be from newegg (if the link works):

Just make sure that you get the correct drive.

However, I have a couple of questions. The link you posted shows a couple of 320 gb HD at the top of the list. Which of these two, are you referring to in your message? you also said that it has to be ATA 300 or faster. My question is, under what is ATA 300 listed in the HD's specifications. I looked at other sites, as wells as, your link for price comparison but I did not see “ATA 300” listed anywhere. When you said a “web page search”. Did you mean that there’s a web page that helps find the compatible HD to one’s system……

Any of the drives would be fine. You can go with a bigger drive as well. It is just an example of the drives available from one vendor. Other vendors are also possible.

It is a bit unclear, but the ATA300 seems to mean SATA 300MB/s (3Gbit/s), which is basically the low end today, although some older drivers are slower. You should be able to use a slower drive, but most likely you don't want to and it is not worth it. You can also use a faster SATA drive and it should use the slower speed if you system can't connect at the 600 MB/s.

The search I provided limited the disks to either the 3 or 6 Gb/s (look at the left side, down a bit).

When I said "web page search", I searched using a web site for searching, such as google, but I used duckduckgo.com. I entered the system name that you posted and found a web page which listed what came with the machine.
