Chronology: hit power button, no response. Hit power button, computer turned on and immediately turned off. Repeated sequence. Unplugged and replugged in computer. Hit power button, computer turns on, I hear hard drive spin up but no boot. No cursor. Computer was hooked up Monday night after a move to a new house packed by professional movers. Computer worked fine from Monday night until Wednesday morning.

Possible causes may include a memory stick or add on card has become unseated, overheating due to the CPU fan becoming disconnected (power cable and/or the heatsink) and a loose internal power connection.

Thank you Phillpower2. The computer is a Dell desktop. I brought it in to a local computer repair shop on Saturday. I get the diagnosis tomorrow. I will keep you apprised. Thanks again

Diagnosis is a bad motherboard.   I am perfectly capable of replacing it myself, but am having difficulty finding a replacement.   Dell does not have a replacement in stock.   They have given me a replacement part number FHPG1.  Computer is a Dell Inspiron 560.   If I pull up my service tag I get the following info:

ASSEMBLY, CHASSIS, MEDIUM TOWER, Pentium 4 Prescott DT, 3.6GHZ, 1 MEGB, 800FSB, BLACK, NON PFC, PWA INTEGRATED

Any recommendations?

I am finding many replacement MBs but none with the part number that Dell have given you.

 

Would it be possible for you to take off the side of the case and make a note of the Mb details that may be embossed onto the board, possibly by the CPU or between the PCI slots.

 

Please note that I cannot be around much today due to other commitments, apologies for any inconvenience that this may cause.

Thanks for your reply.  The part number turned out to be FHPG1.   I found an exact match on eBay, ordered and installed it.  Did not fix the problem.   CPU bad?

Is it still the same black screen.

 

Is this with the new MB inside or outside of the case, a new MB should always be tested outside of the case first.

 

Any error beeps.

 

Is this a MB that does not have any PS/2 ports for a wired keyboard or mouse.

 

Do you have an add on video card or are you using the MBs integrated video chip.

 

What happens if you remove the Ram stick/s and turn on the power - do you get any beeps.

Thanks for the checklist.  I did not test the new motherboard outside of the case first.   How is that accomplished?   You are correct, there are not any PS/2 ports for a wired keyboard or mouse.  Here is the link for the MB I purchased.  It's an exact match. http://www.ebay.com/...-/121292211535?

 

There are no error beeps.   No sounds, just the hard drive spinning up.   Nothing on the screen.   I do have a video card to run two monitors that came with the system.   I was told by the computer repair shop that the card was checked out by replacing it in the shop and re-testing.   I will perform the checks w/o the memory cards and video card and report back.

The link to the MB shows that the board has an onboard speaker behind the main ATX power socket, if the speaker is working it will help with troubleshooting.

 

I will wait on your update before adding anything further, this may include how to test the MB outside of the case if it is necessary.

Test results have exceeded expectation.   Must have not had items plugged in correctly when re-installing.   When I took out the RAM and Video cards and then re-installed them, the new MB works perfectly.   Back up and running.   Thank you for your help
