Hi All,
I'm still running Windows XP but plan on changing to Windows 8.1 It appears that to do so my PC must have NX capability. Currently that is not the case but I've been told that the NX capability may well be there but it hasn't been enabled and that this can be done by accessing the security tab in the BIOS. Well, I can't find a security tab in the BIOS !!

What am I missing?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Have you run the Upgrade Assistant to see if you can upgrade with the same hardware you have?

Then we need to know if this is a Dell, HP, Asus, etc, or home built so we can attempt to find out if it even has NX capability.

Read here on the NX flag in bios: NX flag

EDIT: Found some more info on a tool that can be used.
Go to THIS PAGE which will explain how to use the "coreinfo" program. The link to the program and the instructions are about half way down the page.

The drag and drop in to the command prompt works real sweet.

You can run Windows 8.1 32 bit. I went through this when I upgraded from 8 to 8.1 on my previous Dell Precision 370. It did not have NX support and when I tried to upgrade from Windows 8 X64 to Windows 8.1 X63 it failed.

After a lot of searching and asking questions I found out I did not have the requisite hard/BIOS support because MS deci3ded to remove the emulation code that allowed non-NX systems to run their 64 bit OS.

I switched to a clean install of 8.1 32 bit and it installed and ran fine. I only had 4GB of ram on that computer so there was no real loss.

Yes, I ran the Upgrade Assistant and coreinfo.   Coreinfo indicated that NX was not enabled and that is when I tried to access the Security tab in the BIOS to see if it was available zbut not toggled on.   However, as I indicated in my first post, I cannot find a Security tab in the BIOS.

The system I am running is and MSI "Gigabyte" PC with Pentium  Dual Core E5200 2.5 GHz and 2GB RAM
