I did all the neccesary steps before creating the Hijack This log. My Norton Antivirus detected the Trojan Alwayup but could not remove it....access denied. Infection in C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\KDM7G1QB\aun_0032[1].exe. Norton continues to display on my System Status: Alert. Here is my log:

Hey LoopHole,

Don't have a printer yet. Had to write all instructions by hand
I could not run Clean Up in safe mode. The program is not even on my desktop or programs. I scanned with Ewido and no infections. I saved the log in safe mode and can't find the log in normal mode. Only logs I have is an Active Scan log and the HiJackThis logs. I also did not run Clean up yet. Should I do it now? Let me know if I did anything wrong.

When I tried to remove the Need2Find it says RUNDLL Error loading C:\Progra~1\Need2F~1\bar\1.bin\Nd2FnBar.dll The Specified module could not be found.

Now open pocketkillbox Select the option "Delete on reboot".
Now highlight and 'copy' (Ctrl + C) the entire list of filepaths below:
Click 'File' on the killbox menu at the top and choose 'Paste from clipboard'
The entire list should now be in the "Full Path of File to Delete"
field.To check, click on the dropdown-arrow next to that field.
If you expand it, these lines should all be there.

Okay......KillBox only deleted C:\WINDOWS\smdat32a.sys. For some reason, the other file (C:\Need2Find) could not be copied and pasted on the field. Something else happened. When I rebooted the computer....it states that new hardware was found. I haven't added any hardware device to my computer. Kinda weird.

Hey loophole,

The computer runs fine while I am using it. Take a long time to start up though. And everytime I boot up....windows wizard says there is a new hardware installed...which I have not added. What I do is cancel the wizard. The device is ATWPKT2. Ever heard of that. Thanks for your help, I really appreciate the time you took with me.

Lets see if we can solve these other problems

Uninstall Ewido and uninstall one of your 2 antivirus (AVG,norton)You only need one antivirus running as two will conflict( I forgot to mention this earlier ). Either one are good, but I assume you paid for norton so I would keep that untill your subscription runs out. This should help on your startup speed.

ATWPKT2 This is related to AOL and alot of people have had this problem. Renaming the files has proved successful. To do this, launch Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\ACS and rename ATWpkt2.sys and ATWpkt2.VXD with a .old file extension for example ATWpkt2.old If that doesnt solve your problem then rename the files back to the way they were and we will try a couple other things.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

• AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
• Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
• More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
