I usually don't have difficulty running sfc /scannow either from Start/Run or from the command line. 

And this time is like all previous runs, it has started just fine, just takes a while to complete. 

I'll get back to you if any surprises show up.  It has always run clean, no burps, in the past.

 

I can access C:\i386 by entering my Recovery Console at bootup.  I can also reach D:\MiniXP the same way.

I just tried starting IPSEC after sfc /scannow completed with no comments and I still get the error message:

"Could not start the IPSEC Services service on Local Computer.

Error 1747:  The authentication service is unknown."

                                            I found the answer to the IPSEC not starting!!

 

After sfc /scannow did not work, I went online researching "Error 1747:  The authentication service is unknown windows xp".

 

I found several hits including an entry that *I* had actually started on June 7, 2012 on answers.microsoft.com/ which suggested a fix for Winsock2 corruption, which did not work, and that I had totally forgotten about!  I do not remember exactly what prompted this post on answers.microsoft.

 

 

The "Golden Egg" was finding the correct answer on a posting on Web Insight dated March 10, 2013, as follows:

IPSEC Services Error 1747: The authentication service is unknown - Fix for Windows XP

 

When looking at Windows XP's Event Viewer one might encounter this authentication service is unknown error. 

 

This probably indicates that the IPSEC Services Service, which manages IP security policy and starts the ISAKMP/Oakley (IKE) and the IP security driver on the computer, is disabled and unresponsive to commands to start.

If IPSEC Services won't start and attempts to enable the service by selecting Start, Manual, or Automatic under Start → Control Panel → Administrative Tools → Services do not work, the reason may be an uninstalled or missing Client for Microsoft Networks module and the solution may be to activate Client for Microsoft Networks. 

 

Go to Start → Control Panel → Network Connections and select a connection or create a new one.  Select Properties.   

 

In the window under the heading "This connection uses the following items:" Client for Microsoft Networks is probably not installed. 

 

Install it by clicking Install..., then selecting Client and clicking Add..., selecting Client for Microsoft Networks, and then OK.

 

Reboot, then Restart IPSEC Services service--->OK.

Yes, it is running now, Started/Automatic.

Sorry I didn't add that little piece of information, it was late, I was tired.

I have not checked for any other of the things that are related to the IPSEC services.

Start, Run, eventvwr.msc, OK to bring up the Event Viewer.  Right click on System and Clear All Events, No (we don't want to save the old log), OK. Repeat for Application.

Reboot.
 

Run VEW for system and application and let's see if anything else is broken.

Not too bad.  Windows Search is hosed as usual on XP.  I would just turn it off in the services.msc window.  (Set it to Demand or Disabled).

 

Don't know what the iPod Service is but I assume it is unhappy because the iPod is not plugged in.  You could just uninstall it. or ignore the error.

 

Tomorrow is my last day before a month long road trip.  Friday and Saturday we will be on the road so may not have Internet so expect delays.

 

Have you tried installing FTM since you got IPSEC to work?

Yes, I have tried, still getting the access denied error when the InstallShield wizard  tries to work.  Same with SE version. 

 

Didn't we recently disable the Windows Search services? 

My short term memory is flairing up again (because of meds).  Temporary, I hope.  I'll go back and check on what we have done so far

Just to give you an update.

I didn't actually remove IE8, but I did make FireFox the primary and only browser available (by following an online site showing how to do it) by pulling everything related to IE8 into the background.

It's still installed as a program with all it's previous updates.

The article was talking about IE(X) is needed for WinXP to look and work right and showed how to shut everything down as far as availability is concerned.

I don't know if this still makes IE8 vunerable to attack but will wait to see what you think about it.

 

I don't have those "runaway" IE8 problems anymore and the computer does run a bit cooler than before even doing a big job.  "Hangs" have almost completely gone away.

I think that perhaps more tuneup is still needed, and I am getting used to using Firefox.

One thing I had to track down was how to make FF act like IE did when trying to save a shortcut to the desktop.

I got that with installing deskCut which almost does everything the same, except for pulling an icon for the shortcut from the webpage it is pointing to, instead of the basic FF icon which shows now.

Perhaps there's another app for that also.  I have noticed that literally tons of apps are available for FF, it's just going to take a while to weed through them all to see if I actually want them applied.  I'm taking it very slowly.

 

I still haven't been able to install the FTM software and therefore still can't access my family history files to move forward.

 

 

Anyway, I hope your trip is working out for you and maybe you'll drop me a line when you get back.
