I'm completely flummoxed - I hope someone can give me some ideas.

Here's what's happened:

I access a website - crochetville.com - on a regular basis.  Last night it started acting wonky when I tried to post (kicking me to the front page and not saving my post).  I tried 3 or 4 times without success.  And then suddenly I was unable to access the website at all.  It's not that it won't let me log in, it simply won't load.  I get the "the server is taking too long to respond" thing.

Okay, so I thought it was down; but that's not the case.  Friends on facebook tell me they can get in; plus I was receiving email notifications of responses to some forum threads there.

  1. First step - I rebooted my computer.  Didn't help.
  2. Tried a different browser (was first on Firefox; tried Chrome and even IE - running Windows 7).  Neither helped.
  3. Decided to try on my table (Kindle Fire) - couldn't access it there either.
  4. Tried on my smart phone - couldn't access it there either (phone was connected to our wifi).
  5. Tried my husband's computer; nada.
  6. Turned the wifi off on my phone; using the cell service I was able to access the site - no problem.
  7. So since it appeared to be something with out wifi/modem; we unplugged it; let it sit for a few minutes and plugged it back.  Didn't help.
  8. Went to a local coffee shop this morning with my laptop - got onto the site with no problem.

So apparently it IS something to do with our modem??  Why would it suddenly decide to not connect to a specific website?  I've poked around in the Network & Sharing Center on my laptop, but I don't see anything that looks like it has anything to do with not connect to a website.  I ran the troubleshooting program there and it says everything looks like it's working fine; except that it can't connect to that website.

I've not come across any other site that I can't connect to - just that one.

I don't even know what to try??

Thanks for any ideas.

Pam

Do you just have one box ie: Your modem and wireless router is one, you don't have to separate devices?

Here are some things I can think of that could possibly be going on:

1. Your public IP address (which is given to you by your internet service provider) has been blacklisted somewhere for some reason and so far you only know of the one website that uses that blacklist reference, or it is the website's own blacklist.

2. There is something weird going on with your router

3. There is a problem with the path that your internet service provider uses to access that website. The other ways you access it are using a different downstream path

Do you have a cable you can use to plug your computer directly into your router (no wireless) and try it that way?

Also, on one of your computers (on wireless) open the stat menu and type cmd (on windows vista, 7, or 8) and open the program that appears. Type traceroute crochetville.com and press enter. Copy and paste the results.

Apparently something I did triggered the website's anti-malware program and you're right, my IP was blacklisted.  It was finally fixed this morning and the owner of the site is going to find out exactly what I did that made it happen.  I'm teaching an online class on the website so I'm on there a lot and was *trying* to post several threads - we're thinking maybe I was too industrious and they thought I was spamming or something.  :-)

Being blacklisted had never even occurred to me as a possibility - I was going nuts trying to figure out why my modem/router would be blocking ONE website, you know??

Thank you so much for responding - I appreciate it!!

I'm glad to hear that you got it all sorted out. You did a good job of troubleshooting it yourself.
