Hello all:

 

We have a Dell computer that runs on Windows XP.  It runs very slowly because of previous downloads and such, I suspect.  We got this from my wife's sister.  Is there any way for us to reboot it to its original condition without the disc(s) that came with it?  We are only as savvy as looking for things on the internet and using Microsoft Office type software.

First we should check it if has a failing hard drive. Download, install and run GSMARTControl. It should show a little icon of a hard drive in the window that opens. Doubleclick on the icon, then click on the attributes tab at the top. It will show a table. Let me know the numbers in the Raw Value column for the following rows: Reallocated Sector Count, Power On Time, Spin-Up Retry Count, Current Pending Sector Count, Offline Uncorrectable, and anything it highlights in red.

 

Technically you are supposed to use the discs that came with it. If you are using the internet, I do not recommend using Windows XP anymore. Have you looked into installing a version of Linux?
