On my CD disk for the Mint version attempts on 2 computers fail to boot.

 

Opening the CD there are the following listed:-

 

boot

efi

KNOPPIX

autorun

autorun

autorun

cdrom

index

 

The Linux info says I should not have an ISO file in the disc- that's OK then but have some folders such as casper and isolinux which I don't.

 

Can anyone please inform me if this is the bootable disc or not - thanks.

Have you maybe used this disc before? KNOPPIX is a different version of Linux and would not have been burned onto your disc from the Linux Mint image file. And yes, there should be other folders on your disc.

Yes you are right - I made discs for Knoppix and Mint some time ago and forgot there were 2 versions - both would not boot.

 

What's on the Mint disc are:-

 

.disk; boot; casper; install; isolinux; preseed; autorun; md5sum; MD5SUMS; mint4in

 

So the casper is there but  there is that isolinux which supposedly I shouldn't have (is it an ISO file?).

 

This is quite different form the Knoppix content - is this a clue? Can you tell if the Mint CD and Knoppix CD are in fact  image files and if so why wouldn't they boot? (OK in the bios setup)

I should have re run this Mint disc again to remember the stoppage.

 

It get to Mint Boot and then on a black screen I get the message:-

 

1.6402911 Kernal panic - not syncing: UFS: Unable to mount root fs in unknown block (2,0)

 

Also the Caps Lock and the Scroll Lock are both flashing.

 

Could not do anything else at this stage so had to press the off button to get out of this situation.

I have found out that the CD list as in my Post #3 is identical to that from correct info I've received. So it just the remaining glitch "1.6402911 Kernal panic - not syncing: UFS: Unable to mount root fs in unknown block (2,0)" to attend to.

isolinux is fine, it's not an ISO file. I think you burned the disc correctly. I think you better test your computer's RAM. Download Memtest86+ and extract it, then burn the iso file to a disk, then try booting up to that disc. You should like Memtest run for 6 passes or 8 hours, which ever comes first. Unless it marks an error in red, then you can stop testing right away.

Thanks for that - wouldn't it be easier and quicker to try the CD on all my other computers, 2 out of 4 failed , as not all of their RAM could be bad, could it?  I'll try the others tomorrow.

Thought I'd try this netbook before bed.

 

Same error message as in my Post #4 except it's not UFS, my mistake, but VFS.

 

I notice on the Mint start screen there is an option for Memory Test - is this any good?

Hmmm, yes it is unlikely the RAM is bad on 2 and you get the same error.

How far does it get into booting? The memor test probably is the same program.

I suspect it might be a setting in the BIOS for those two computers. What are the model names?

Tried again on this laptop with almost same result. The start of the error message has 3.0963031.

 

I get the Mint start screen saying booting in x seconds after which it goes into that black screen error.

 

Bios models:

Insyde Software Corp. M1.1303/06/2006

American Megatrends 4.6.3 10/06/2008

Phoenix Tech. , LTD 6.00 PG07/08/2003

 

Being a 3 time loser this probably indicates that the Mint disc is faulty or Linux itself can be very dodgy which seems more likely IMO.

Ok, so 2 computers it has never worked on, 1 it has worked once before, and 1 it works on?

And none of them will boot to knopix?

I wouldn't think it is a problem with Linux Mint unless you don't have a stable release. It is very compatible and unlikely that it would not work on 3 different computers. I would think the disc is bad, but if they cannot boot to knoppix either...

Neither Knoppix nor Mint will boot on 3 computers.  I'm going to set aside Linux for now and settle for Win 7.
