Firstly, I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right forum but hopefully I am. My 1TB hard drive stopped working yesterday. I gave it to my brother to watch some movies the other night and he first tried to plug it in to his Playstation which didn't work so he plugged it into his laptop instead and it worked fine. He gave it back to me the next morning and I tried to use it on my laptop and it wouldn't work. I plugged it into the USB port and the hard drive would light up and make buzzy noises (I know,very un-technological word but that's how I'd describe it!) and I was able to safely remove USB device but there was no way I could access the contents of it. I've tried it in all the USB ports on my laptop and on my brother's laptop again and it just does the same thing. I have a lot of really important stuff on that hard drive and I would hate to lose it all, so any advice would be much appreciated I have an HP laptop running Windows 7 and the hard drive is WD Elements.

Connect the external Hard Drive to your computer, open the Disk Manager, expand the window to show the information related to the external disk take a screenshot and attach to your post please.

Things aren't looking good! Windows isn't recognizing the Hard Disk as it should.

 

The disc is under warranty?

I'm not too sure if it's under warranty or not, I bought it just under a year ago so it might be! Do you think there's anything I can do to fix it myself? Or should I take into a computer store and see if they can do anything?

Sometimes the problem is only with the external case interface, if you open the case remove the Hard Disk and connect it directly to a desktop computer or an adapter it could work.

Before opening the case you need to check the warranty status because opening the case will end the warranty.

 

With the hard drive connected directly if there are no changes on the access to the data then the HDD is bad or/and have the partition table corrupted. In cases like that it's necessary to use recovery tools or use professional recovery services on the worst cases.

Try 4Card Recovery. It's a freeware and can recover a variety of files.

Step 1. Download it on your computer and install it.

Step 2. Start it and select the files that you want to recover.

Step 3. Scan it and wait for a few moment.

Step 4. Save your recovered data on other place.
