I believe I'll need to upgrade my motherboard, it being quite old and not allowing USB boot, but I worry about the amount of money I would be required to pay and whether or not it'd fit in my case.

My current CPU is an AMD athlon X2 64 bit 2.4GH

My current RAM sticks are in pairs, 4 GB each (2x2).

 

I'm afraid I can't get Speccy for a more detailed system report since I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, and am still learning. If still relevant, i can link to the specs in an older thread. The changes since then were +4 GB RAM and swapping out a dying HDD.

 

The reason behind my plan to change mobo is that I cannot seem to be able to install windows 7 whatever I try. My disc drive whirs, then stops. Then whirs, stops for a long time then repeats. I'm going to try with a friend's disc drive if I can install win7, but if not then by order of elimination it is ought to be something with my mobo. And even if not, the inability to boot from USB is quite annoying.

What version of W7 are you installing, 32/64 bit?

What kind of disc have you got, OEM, burned ISO?

It asks for a product key. I've got it as part of a government program for students.  And I am going for the 64 bit version.

AS always, we are more than happy to help you, but before looking at the hardware upgrade, just want to make sure you do not have problems similar to when you purchased your other w7 software.

Please give a link to where you purchased the Product key.   This so we can know of any limitations to the licence.

Did you have to download the software, or did you get a disc?

If you downloaded the software, please give the link and the utility used to bunt the disc.

 

The failed installation could be because.

1.   The hardware does not support the software.

2.   If a burned disc is used, the download ISO or disc burning are corrupt. 

 

If you intend to use the software on a new MB, please do not install on the existing one as the software licence may limit how you can use it.
