I hope somebody can help me with my problems or suggest other threads that might help me.  I have looked at several other threads but none had the same issues together I have.

Here are my problems:

1. I can download updates, programs, and drivers but when I try to install them they will disappear during the installation process.  If I selected save during the download a copy of the program is available, however, if I select run the file disappears.  I have a printer I'm trying to load drivers for and it keeps disappearing during installation.

2. System Restore does not work.  When I select the Restore Point to restore, it goes through the process and I get the following error: "An unspecified error occurred during system restore. (0xc0000022)"  The restore does not take place and the restore point is no longer available in the restore log.  I tried to use the restore point from a couple of weeks ago before I started noticing problems.  I also lost the next oldest restore point I had with the same problem.  Only restore points now available were from a couple of days ago.

3. I can't boot into safe mode.  When I try, it ignores the F8 key and just loads as normal.

4. It took me about 6 times rebooting the system to get it to install Windows updates that may have been there for awhile.  It is set to update automatically but my wife said there was an exclamation point inside a yellow triangle on the corner of the Shutdown button.  It took me 6 reboots to get rid of this symbol.

My system is:

Do you have the Operating system disc? Did you ever make a system repair disc. ?

Try booting if you can from the OS disc choose  repair .

Also try this first, should help with some issues:

PC to run chkdsk:
from the elevated command prompt, type chkdsk c: /f /r
Do the same for the other drive
again from the elevated command prompt, type:
    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    then run: sfc /scannow

If it helps copy and paste this it has to be exactly as shown.

Wait for each to complete, chkdsk could take awhile, hours maybe.

Then try system restore afterwards.

Thanks jds63,

I just moved and have no idea where the original OS disc or system repair disc is.

I will continue through the steps listed above to see what happens.

Thanks

jds63,

Here's my results:

1. chkdsk - I ran as written from the elevated command prompt

2. dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth - this did not run successfully it errored out

3. sfc /scannow - no validation issues

System Restore still does not work, it errored out with the same error message as listed above.  Still can not install driver updates.

Any other suggestions?

Usually you have to reboot to do a chkdsk

After, this is easier way to get the report of chkdsk to see what is found and fixed.

1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog, type powershell.exe, and press Enter.

2. In PowerShell, copy and paste the command below, and press Enter.

get-winevent -FilterHashTable @{logname="Application"; id="1001"}| ?{$_.providername –match "wininit"} | fl timecreated, message | out-file Desktop\CHKDSKResults.txt

3. You will now have a CHKDSKResults.txt file created on your desktop that is the log file of your chkdsk scan results from Event Viewer.

Are you sure you typed the DISM correct

copy and paste if best:  dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Try it again, then an sfc /scannow both at elevated command prompt (Run as Admin)

Do you have a recovery partition on this PC ?

I believe in Windows 7 there is a way to have made a repair disc., now not sure doing it without the original OS disc. which you could really use.

- You are correct - chkdsk did require a reboot

- The log file created from above instructions is listed below.  I did not see any issues listed on it.  But I'm clearly not an expert.

- I did not type DISM - I copied and pasted as you suggested.  I originally did this twice to make sure I was doing it properly.  I just did it again - same error.  It says, "Error 87 The restorehealth option is not recognized in this context."

- I ran both DISM and sfc in elevated command mode - run as admin

- I will see if I can find the original OS discs.  I don't see a recovery partition.

Thanks

Last part of the chkdsk were missing.

The only time I have seem error 87 is when the spaces were forgotten

You are just entering the command incorrectly possibly.
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Let me know if you find the operating disc's, be surprised you have no recovery partition, check Disk management to make sure of this.

Evidently when I copied the chkdsk log I didn't get it all.  I apologize for not checking to make sure it was all there.  The entire log is listed below.

As stated above, I am using copy and paste to enter the DISM command that you gave me.  A few minutes ago I tried it again by copying and pasting from your post #7.  Unfortunately, the same error was given.

I didn't think about running disk management to look for the partition.  Yes there is a recovery partition.

Here's the chkdsk log:

By the way, You are Welcome.

Chkdsk looks good.

If nothing has changed and you are still having issues with system restore and can't seems to do a DISM.

My suggestion would be to try a system repair, but you say you can not locate the original operating disc.

So you most likely have some corrupt or missing files on the system.

With no OS disc. only choice would be a system recovery from the recovery partition, which you will loose whatever you put on the system since you bought it.(software, drivers)

By pressing F8 or F9 during boot to get you into the recovery partition ,there you can restore your PC to factory default. Everything should be good then.

Try listing the brand and model of the PC if you do not know how to get into this recovery partition and i will try to then help you.

It is most likely F9.

Thanks for the reply - I have been out of town for a few days.

System Restore works but DISM doesn't.

I still can't load drivers.  I had an issue with my printer that I needed to download drivers (I could not find this disk either) and when I tried to download and install the file from the internet, it keeps disappearing during the middle of installation.  I went to WalMart and bought a new printer and was able to install the drivers from the cd that came with the printer.  I printed what I needed then uninstalled the printer and made sure all drivers were deleted.  I went to HP website and downloaded the drivers. When I installed, it disappeared again after checkmarking the EULA.  I got out the cd and successfully installed the drivers.  Could this be an IE or Chrome problem?  I get the same problem when using either one.

Your Welcome, O.k., i do not think it is a Browser problem. But when you download the drivers do you try to run it from the browsers download or did you try to run it from your Windows download folder ?

Usually it should not make a difference unless it is a zip file, then it needs to be unzipped before.

Glad you resolved system restore, try to always make manual restore points too as you install or make any changes to your system.

One other question, does this happen to any other software you install ?
