Hi All,

I've read related threads on the forum.

I've issues with my computer which suddenly shut down and upon re-booting, display the POST screen briefly and later "No Video Signal"

Prior to the PC shutting down, I heard a noise like sometime fell inside and when opened the side cover after seeing the "No Video Signal" message, one of the plastic extension which enable the heat-sink to click when mounted on the CPU was broken, thus, slightly disengaging the heat-sink fan from the CPU.

The PC specs is as follows:

- Mobo: Winfast N15235

- CPU Socket is Foxconn AM2 LF

- CPU is AMD Athlon 64 x2 Processor (dual core)

- Onboard graphics

I've tried the following diagnosis to no avail:

- LCD monitor works with my laptop

- Re-seat the RAMs (two: 1G and 512; which is unlikely both failed at the same time) and cleaned the

edges and the RAMs slots. Swap each RAM at a time in alternative RAM slot positions.

- Reset the BIOS by removing the CMOS battery, power on and put back the battery

- Measure all the power supply voltages and even try with a different PSU

- Can't hear any beep codes so can tell if CPU or mobo is faulty

What i'm considering doing:

- Try and external PCIe VGA card and see if it helps

- Buy a new / replacement CPU, since the fault was as a result of the heat-sink fan not making contact. The CPU do gets warn if the CPU fan is unplugged -- does this indicate the CPU is fine?

- Will the speccy software render any help, since i can't see any POST screen?

I'm waiting for the Foxconn mobo manual to download:

Please, in the interim, any ideas other than the above will be appreciated.

Regards

Paul

You need to replace the CPU cooler as a priority as the processor will be getting continually hotter than is safe, should the computer actually stay on, what this means is that the CPU would fry slowly as opposed to quickly burning out as one would if the fan had failed altogether, please note that the present thermal compound must be cleaned off properly before the new HS is attached, most quality heatsinks come with a pre applied thermal pad, check that any potential replacement HS does before you purchase or you will also need to obtain some thermal compound, a guide to help with the cleaning and preparing can be found here

Some info as to what can happen if a HS is not mounted correctly. 1: the bond between the HS and CPU is lost and the CPU overheats. 2: The thermal compound hardens and again the CPU overheats. 3: Uneven pressure is applied to the top of the CPU which can result in various problems with the integrated video chip when one is in use + BSOD due to the CPU memory controller being affected, when an add on video card is used this will often function ok but the system will still blue screen due to the CPU memory controller being compromised.

The CPU does appear to still be ok btw, please keep it that way by replacing the HS before applying the power again

NB: Any replacement cooling fan that you may also purchase ie pre mounted on the HS, it must be the 4 pin type so that you can manually configure the fan speed etc in Smart Fan.
