I've got an HP Laptop:  HP ENVY 14T-1200

 

The power cord and adapter that came with the laptop has recently become finicky and is starting to fail, so I ordered a new adapter. I found that HP's adapters are really expensive, so I went third party.

 

Under light use everything is fine, but I like to game sometimes and there is a very noticeable performance difference when I am using the new adapter. Some games will stutter for a few seconds every minute or so, and others will turn into slideshows when lots of stuff is happening on the screen. It seems as if once the GPU load hits a certain threshold, it gets throttled.

 

I've tried these things:

- Double checked the power plan settings, set usage to high performance

- Double checked to make sure the new adapter outputs the appropriate wattage for my machine

- Used hardware monitoring software to check temperatures, cleaned out my fans

 

The biggest fact that points to the new power adapter as causing the problem is that everything works fine on the old adapter (in the few instances I can actually get it to provide power).

 

I've heard about Dell deliberately causing slow downs on third party power adapters, but I haven't heard anything like that from HP. I wouldn't be surprised in the least, though.

 

Another possibility is that the new adapter isn't outputting what it says it is. I've yet to test that.

 

Anyway, any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Generic power supplies are just that and unfortunately the world over has been flooded with cheap imports that are not fit for purpose, I sense that you have more than an inkling that the replacement power supply is not up to snuff, here is a link where you will see various reports of a genuine but flaky power adapter jack causing the type of issues that you describe.

 

There is no conspiracy by Dell btw, their notebooks are known to not play nicely with non Dell replacement batteries but it is more a compatibility thing with the BIOS and power management etc, I don't like Dell computers and I don`t work for them btw

You may be better to return the replacement power adapter if you can and bite the bullet and purchase a genuine HP item.

 

Have you tried swapping just the power cord that plugs into the DC jack port, old cord + new adapter and vice versa etc.
