They told me there is probably a damaged Windows file that's why they suggested reinstallation but I would try anything else before that.

Thanks I will follow those steps and post in the malware forum !

While you are waiting on a reply from the malware staff please do the following;

Run chkdsk and System File Checker (SFC) from the Recovery Console

  • Boot your Vista or Windows 7 installation DVD
  • When you see "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD", press Enter
  • At the "Install Windows" screen, click on Repair your computer at lower left
  • At the System Recovery Options screen, make note of the drive letter assigned to your boot drive (normally C:) and click Next
  • At the Chose a Recovery Tool window, click on Command Prompt. You will be sitting at X:\Sources directory
  • Run chkdsk or SFC
    • If you did not note the drive letter of your boot disk, you can enter bcdedit and look at the osdevice line to see what it is.
    • For chkdsk, type chkdsk c: /r and press Enter (use the letter from above if not C:).
    • For sfc, type sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows and press Enter (use the letter from above)

Let either run to completion undisturbed.

Vista or Windows 7: If you do not have a Windows Vista installation DVD, you can download a legal copy with SP1 integrated from here:

Download Official Windows Vista RTM with SP1 Setup Files (32-bit and 64-bit).

Please note that once you have received a reply to your malware topic our work here must stop, this so that it does not interfere with the work of the malware staff, in addition,  can I ask that you edit your malware topic to include a link to this topic so that the steps already taken can be checked.

Hi phillpower2 :)

Recommendation from Malware forum is that I backup my data and do a fresh install of Windows 7. You can read the whole topic on this link >>> http://www.geekstogo...-2#entry2416127

Hello Andro,

Having read your malware topic I am aware that a fresh install has been suggested by the malware removal staff, your computer has been given the all clear of malware so before you do a fresh install of the Windows 7 I suggest that you run SFC (system file checker) first to see if this puts the files that Biscuithd mentions where they should be, please note that it is sometimes necessary to run SFC 3 or more times to repair any/all errors found, can I first of all ask what type of Windows 7 media was used when you upgraded from XP as in a full retail or OEM disk, a download from Microsoft etc.

Please note that I have only made this suggestion due to the computer being declared malware free and I am in no way undermining the advice that has previously been offered by the malware staff, if SFC does not resolve the issue you have lost nothing only your time spent on it and a fresh install should be seriously considered.

That is a bad idea unless you wish to return to the malware forum and have your computer cleaned up again, also keep in mind that we are all bound by the GTG Terms of Use

p. The posting of links or references to warez or any other type of illegal software is strictly forbidden. By doing so you risk having your user account terminated without warning. We will NOT help anyone we suspect of having obtained their software or services illegally.

As long as you have a genuine Windows 7 product key for your presently installed OS you can download a legitimate Windows 7 ISO to use and keep.

I think there is no need to return to malware forum...they already said that my computer is clean. I also didn't post any links or references of illegal software...I just said that Windows is probably downloaded from some site...I don't know if it really is !!!

I was not suggesting that you return to the malware forum

In your reply #37 you said  "I borrowed a Windows 7 DVD from a friend...I suppose he downloaded it from some torrent site"

This is cracked software which in itself is a crime to use and due to its dubious nature cracked software is notorious for being loaded with malware, remember that these people are criminals who have no scruples when it comes to infecting peoples computers and/or stealing peoples personal/banking details.

The crux of it is no one at GTG will assist people that have cracked and therefore illegally obtained software.
