I am new here and I hope I am posting in the right place

My internet package for my netbook has a limit of 2.5GB a month data transfer.

I have tried using Zone Alarm for virus protection and firewall but it is using nearly 1GB a month of my precious allocation. I have contacted them and they say there is no way of reducing this.

Does anyone know of any alternative that will not cause this problem. I would prefer free software but if the only solution is to pay a small fee then I would consider that.

Any other advice? - please do not suggest I change my contract as this is not possible.

My operating system is Windows XP.

I would recommend using a newer version of the Windows OS as Windows XP has become outdated.

You may want to check out Avast Free AV (here) and Online Armor Firewall (here).  They work well together and should not demand too much of your data bandwidth.

Avast is another good one that is really light on system resources and updates at least once a day with new virus definitions.

I have downloaded and installed Avast and will monitor how much it uses.

It looks like I have to pay for Online Armor Firewalll. Do I really need this or could I just use Windows firewall?l

I am happy with XP even though I am aware it is no longer supported.

I have limited funds and do not want to pay for a new OS every time Microsoft decide I should

I use windows firewall with no problems along with Avast as my AV and Malwarebytes to manually check for things once a week. Avast will run in the background but only run Malwarebytes manually. With those 3 programs you should be ok depending on your internet surfing habits.

Thank you everyone for your advice.

I will try out the combination that rshaffer61 suggests and see how it goes

I have been using Avast now for 3 weeks and it has used just over 1GB of my 2.5GB monthly allowance.

Because of all the problems I have been having with my limited allowance I have decided to switch to WiMax. I am having it installed in the next few days. That will be unlimited usage so this should no longer be a problem.

All I hope is that the speed I get is fast enough and that the system will be reliable.

Oh the joys of living in Spain  . How I miss my UK cable broadband.
