Hi all,

This has now become a request in sheer desperation.

I have a friends laptop that I have been requested to repair/recover... but this is the first time ever in 10 years I have been stumped.

Apart from the incredible amount of similar problems seen by making a simple google search I understand that if I try any of the sugestions given they will probably make my situation worse.

This all started from doing a simple restore on a machine that would just not connect to the internet.

Now I have been left with the following:

STOP: c0000135 the program can't start because %hs is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

As a quick starter this lappy has never had avg installed on it, (in fact that's why i had it to put some av on it).

but it did have norton360 which had run out ages ago.

I am open to any suggestions apart from format and reinstall as I do not have my friends asus disk.

Just a quicky, but its windows 7 home, 64bit, 8gb mem, If there is anything else required please ask.

thank you to any one who can help with this problem as I am at a total loss.

sadsack6767

p.s. sorry for any spelling mistakes as firefox has decided not to check my spelling on this website (strange)...

----

sorry i forgot I only found out about the error after a F8 and "do not restart the system" also will not boot into safemode, or any of the other items listed.

I thought it might b a good idea to download and prepair a thumb drive with 64bit ver of farbar recovery tool, I have done this. but I believe that to use it I would need to F8, then select the Repair your computer, If I do this i get a cmd prompt appear that seems to do its own thing, then I am shown the "asus preload wizard" this then gives a warning that the HD will be wiped... very helpful.

I have tried booting from a win usb thumb drive but I am stopped from being able to use the "repair your computer" by "This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of windows you are trying to repair." Luckily the last time I had this to clean I did make a recovery disc.....  but I don't think I can use it to "repair your computer".

any guidance chaps....

Hi sadsack and welcome to GeeksToGo :)

You said that AVG have never been installed on that system to your knowledge, right ? Well, let's check it out together shall we ? Can you go to the following folder location and check if you see any folder named "AVG" ?

C:\Program Files (x86)\
C:\Program Files\
C:\ProgramData\ (you must enable "Show hidden files and folders" in the Folder Options in order to see that one)
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local (you must enable "Show hidden files and folders" in the Folder Options in order to see that one)
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming (you must enable "Show hidden files and folders" in the Folder Options in order to see that one)

Also, if Norton 360 has ran out and isn't running anymore, I suggest you that for the troubleshooting you uninstall it and install an Antivirus recommended by an official GeeksToGo helper here.

This should get you started while we wait for an official helper to come give you a hand :)

I'd love to my friend but I just cannot get this to boot to any form of op system, cannot do safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, enable boot logging, last known good config, directory services restore mode, debugging mode, .. ... the only one that will work is disable automatic restart on system failure, that's when I see the STOP: c0000135 the program can't start because %hs is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

I can try one of my boot discs that I have, that I use for mainly xp machines and see if I can see the files/folders you mentioned, give me 5min and i'll be back...

oops p.s. norton had already been uninstalled ready for avira or avg to go onto it. but I didn't get that far.   Decided to simply do a system restore to an earlier date and now I have this crap....

I've not had much luck with my boot discs, I tried my latest Hirens and managed to get into win xp, but alas it cannot see my HD.  The boot into Win 7 on the same disk just crashed.

I've tried Neowin's EasyRE for win7 and that does see the HD, I tried a system restore, it took a matter of a few seconds to restore to yesterday mornings auto backup, but upon a reboot it just did the same again, crash, reboot, crash, reboot.

so I tried f8 again to stop the reboot and the stop: c0000135 the program can't start because %hs ect ect is still there.

I tried a few more of my boot cd/dvds and none of them seem to like the asus, ..... but this does not surprise me, some work well on dell's some work on tosh's it just pot luck.

Oups my bad, I misread the part where you said that you couldn't boot in the system.

About that "This version of System Recovery option is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair" could be caused by two or three things :

  • You are trying to use the System Recovery options from a Windows 7 DVD that do not match the current version installed (Windows 7 Home Premium when running Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 32-bits when running Windows 7 64-bits, etc.);

  • You have more than one HDD on the computer, in this case, disable or disconnect the second HDD and make that CD the first boot option in the BIOS;

  • The Recovery CD/DVD is corrupted (the installation on it is);

Do you think case 1 or 2 could apply to your situation ?

hi, my revovery disk is actually a thumb drive that was created by using an original win 7 64 bit pro.     I also have dvd editions as well.

I can boot both but both give the error "This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of windows you are trying to repair."

I have read the info about any extra hardware installed but there are none. only one HD partitioned in half. and the bluray drive.

at the moment i am running a virus check using the EasyRE Pro. this has been running for about an hour but because I have no network connection I have not been able to update the defs. but decided to let it run anyway.

During this time I have also created a kaspersky recovery dvd, from my other clean win 7 64bit laptop. once easyRE has finished I will run the kaspersky dvd on it.

I did try to get the easyRE to do a system recovery, it seemed to find this mornings creation but only took about 15 seconds to recover before i was alowed to reboot, but once again reboot, reboot, reboot.

Well my kaspersky rescue Thumb that I created only gets me as far as the bios :

self-testing....

fat#1  !=fat#2 for lba on this bios

fat#1  !=fat#2 for chs on this bios

Press ctrl+alt+del to reboot

--------------------

The Recovery DVD that I created on my working 64bit other laptop booted (i thought, oh yes, at last,) but nope once again I got, "This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of windows you are trying to repair."

----------------------

I then left easyRE doing a virus check for 6 hours and it found nothing.... although I could not update the defs... I left it to do it's thing, but realized it was probably going to take 2 or 3 days to finish, I decided to cancel it.  (it found nothing).

I'm now going to try the "recovery disc" I created and see about turning off all over boot devices and see what happens. If I can just get into a cmd prompt i can post a frst64 log.

--------------------

even with everything turned off except the main HD i'm still getting the "This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of windows you are trying to repair."

This is becoming a nightmare......

The disabled options in the bios have now dissapeared, surely if you just disable something you have the ability to re-enable it afterwards. they were not deleted only disabled.

all I have now is :

Boot Option  #1               [Windows Boot Manag.....]

Boot Option  #2               [P2  MATSHITABD-CMB...]

So I now have missing the following as from the user manual:

there should be 3 options:

Boot Option  #1                     [P0: WDC  WD7500BPKT....]  obviously my HD would be different, it should be HTS547575A9E384]

Boot Option  #2                     [P2: MATSHITABD-CMB.......]

Boot Option  #3                     [windows boot manager]

and there should be a 4th option Boot Option  #4  "Atheros Boot Agent"

Does anyone know how I could get these back......

how the [bleep] do u post a jpeg to show someone something??

i'm slowly losing the plot now..... lol    DSCF0606 (Small).JPG    and  DSCF0607 (Small).JPG

well I have checked the HD and the Recovery partition is still there, but F9 does nothing..... infact F9 act's more like F8 now.

If I could get the F9 to work I would just use the recovery dvd.
