When running the Adobe Flash upgrade wizard, it downloads the file and then crashes immediately on install.  Something about Dinput8.dll not designed to run in Windows...etc.  I understand that's a directx file?

Any guidance is greatly appreciated!

I am surprised at how much you need Flash Player when on the internet...

Thanks in advance!

Hi jimg1212 and welcome to GeeksToGo :)

While you're waiting for an official Geek helper to assist you, allow me to ask you a couple more information about your issue !

First of all, is that the error message that you're encountering :

C:\Windows\system32\DINPUT8.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

Also, what version of Windows are you running exactly ? Windows Vista or Windows 7 ? 32 or 64-bits ?

From what I can find:

  • Product Name: Microsoft® DirectX for Windows® 95 and 98
  • Internal Name: DInput8.dll

It definitely does not belong on a Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8 computer.

Try updating Adobe Flash manually, Start here: Adobe Flash Player

Click on Player Download Center.
Uncheck McAfee then click Install not.

See if that works.

Can you uninstall your current Adobe Flash Player installation first ?

You can uninstall it either via the Programs Control Panel or by following Adobe's procedure here :

This is really weird. Alright, we'll go by Windows Updates then.

Open your Windows Updates control panel : click on the Start Menu and type in "windows updates" then press Enter. Click on "Search for Updates" and wait for the scan to finish. Once done, if any Important Updates are found, click on them to make sure they're all checked and install all of them. If a restart is required after, do it.

Alright. Let's do a system file check scan then. This scan will verify the integrity of system files and repair them if they are damaged, corrupted or infected.

Click on the Start Menu and enter "cmd". Right-click on the cmd icon that will pop up and select "Run as Admin".

In the command prompt, enter the following command :

sfc /scannow

Tell me what message is returned after the scan.
