I pulled out all of the expansion cards and both hard drives. All that is  inside Is the  motherboard, cpu, cpu fan, dvd-drive and memory. I was trying to re-install a clean install of windows vista. But it would shut down and give me a fatal error no matter what I did. It wont even  let me boot a windows disk wihout a hard drive it still shows a blue sceen with system fatal error. What could it be. Motherboard ? memory or is it possible the cpu is finally starting to go out ?  It is about 7yrs old. Its from 2007

:welcome:    demetri1

Is the CPU fan still connected to the correct fan header on the MB and is it spinning when powered up.

Have you tried reconnecting a HDD but are getting the same fatal error and shut down, the computer will not complete POST with no HDD attached.

yes to the hd. It will complete post but it will not get past the screen where windows is loading up the windows logo in middle of screen. Windows vista. I get the same error with or without a hard drive. But if I leave it alone for a day it will boot into windows but shut down after a couple of minutes. I think the thermal paste may have all dissipated away ? and it damaged the cpu possibly ? have not checked on top of cpu yet.

Unless the HS and CPU cooling fan have been disturbed the original thermal paste will most often outlast the other components.

What is the brand and model name or number of the PSU, do you have or can you borrow a known good PSU for testing purposes.

How many sticks of Ram do you have, if more than one have you tried booting with only one stick inserted or swapped them around.
