Hello All,

I have the adware/trojan called Aurora from BetterInternet with nail.exe files. I have scanned the computer with every available antispyware program.

I have already followed instructions on this forum and gone into safe mode, scanning with ewido and hijackthis. The log files read as follows:

Hello again to All,

I would like to ask for your help again. I have run every possible anti-spyware program, but the adware is still there and has crashed my browser. I had to download all the anti-spyware programs onto somebody else's computer, send them to my computer and run them. Then I saved the logs onto my computer, sent them to another computer where I am logged on right now and writing this. Unfortunately, I can't even post a message through my browser. It gives me an error [404] page instead.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:

Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Ok, laptop is a gonner!!!

I sent the ewido-setup.exe file that you specify above to my laptop via email (IE still not working)! I downloaded that on top of any previous files, ran it and it tells me it was unsuccessful setting up. I can't get ewido in the computer. Now what?

Sorry, one problem after another.

Sorry to panic so quickly.

I tried to reload ewido in a different file, and it finally worked.

I went into safe mode, I ran nailfix.cmd, a window opened and closed very quickly and then I got a message telling me that Windows is running in safe mode and asking me if I wanted to proceed or if I wanted to restore to a previous state (the same message the computer gave me when I went into safe mode). I thought maybe I had done something wrong so I repeated the procedure and the same thing happened. So I said yes and went on to the next step.

I ran ewido and it didn't find any spyware. :tazz:

By the way, it hasn't gone away.

One of the things it has been doing is adding shortcuts to my desktop. It's still doing that. I deleted a shortcut manually about an hour ago and then ran ewido in normal mode. It didn't pick up any spyware but an hour later there were two more shortcuts on my desktop.

I deleted them and turned off the computer.

Is there any hope left? :tazz:

Hi Calsof,

First to answer your doubts -

You get warnings that you are entering the Safe Mode. This is because all the normal functions are not available in Safe Mode e.g. internet connectivity. It is perfectly ok to go into the Safe Mode.

Hijack This logs should be taken while the PC is in NORMAL MODE. In safe mode, the PC is running with the bare minimum processes and therefore the infections may not show up !!!!!!!!!!!!!

The automatic fixes take care of most of the problems. However in some cases, they do not. In order to make sure that infection is removed completely, we tell you to take some additional steps like delete that F2 entry (which you didnt find). If you dont find the entry, it is ok or in fact better.

Ewido Scan did not turn up anything ?? That is very good. :tazz:

Also we tend to remove the most malicious infection first and then clean up the rest of the junk. With Nail / Aurora gone, we can now focus our attention on other malware. We still have an infection. We will take care of it now. Going by what you said in your posts, atleast your are not getting any pop ups !!!!!

Run Hijack This and click on Scan. The following items needs to be fixed -

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Bouncer RunStartup] C:\Program Files\Bouncer\liveupdate.exe 110

Close all windows other than Hijack This and click on Fix Checked.

Reboot the PC in Safe Mode.

Open Add or Remove Programs (click on Start ---> Settings ---> Control Panel. This is the 3rd item). Uninstall / Remove the item - Virtual Bouncer or Bouncer.

Delete the folder -

C:\Program Files\Bouncer

Reboot the PC in NORMAL MODE. Run Hijack This and post a fresh log here. Please also let me know if you have noticable problems

Ok, first things first. I ran hijackthis and selected the item, but the program told me registry change was denied.

Then I got a Microsoft AntiSpyware Notice telling me an application change had been denied.

Then I followed your instructions, logging on in safe mode and going to add/remove programs. The closest name to the ones you mention is a program called VBRunDLL. I now have the computer open in safe mode. I hope you can reply relatively quickly if I should remove that program or not.

Lets try this one more time, but the harsher way -

Please copy these instructions into a text file on your Desktop.

Please disconnect from the Internet. If you have DSL / Cable connectivity, then remove the cable connecting the modem / router to the PC.

Please disable Microsoft Anti-Spyware program. This is being temporarily. Also as you wont be connected to internet so the threat of spyware doesnt exist.

Run Hijack This and check the boxes next to following items -

O2 - BHO: VBRunDLL Class - {197B8CA4-E215-46DD-8F33-E0544A80E5C4} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vbrundll.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Bouncer RunStartup] C:\Program Files\Bouncer\liveupdate.exe 110

Close all windows other than Hijack This and click on Fix checked.

Reboot the PC in Safe Mode.

Locate and delete the following files and folders -

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vbrundll.dll

C:\Program Files\Bouncer <----folder

Reboot the PC in NORMAL MODE.

Run an online scan at - http://housecall.antivirus.com/

Ok, as I was doing this, Spybot Search & Destroy opened a window that told me that it had detected an important registry entry that had been changed: Browser Helper Object, Change Value deleted, O2 - BHO: VBRunDLL Class - {197B8CA4-E215-46DD-8F33-E0544A80E5C4} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vbrundll.dll. I also got a window flashing on and off quickly on the bottom right hand corner of my screen saying something to the effect of "Resident denied the change of O2 - BHO: VBRunDLL Class - {197B8CA4-E215-46DD-8F33-E0544A80E5C4} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vbrundll.dll, registry change denied" again.

After that I could not close that window. I would close it and it would reappear again. So I rebooted into safe mode with the window open.

In safe mode I could not find C:\WINDOWS\system32\vbrundll.dll anywhere in C:\ and the closest I got to finding C:\Program Files\Bouncer was in locating a file where Spybouncer, an antispyware program I have installed, is located. Do you want me to delete that file, the one with SpyBouncer in it?

I am still in Safe mode on the laptop and I am now writing from the other computer again. If you still want me to delete C:\Program Files\Bouncer and reboot to scan, I will gladly do it.

Sorry to be such a pain, but it seems the problem is a bit more deep-rooted than we both first thought. Because I have been in such a mess with the computer lately, I have already backed up various folders in case I have to reformat my disc. It is an Acer laptop with two recovery cds. I don't have a separate cd with Windows XP. Just to make you feel better, if worse comes to worse I would rather you take me through the steps of reformatting and cleaning the disc from scratch. Then I would appreciate it if you could tell me what antispyware to install so that I start from a clean slate.

I'll leave the decision in your hands.

I really appreciate your help and hope this won't take any more of your time than is absolutely necessary.

Hi Calsof,

Can you repeat the entire process after disabling SpyBot S&D also ??

In any case please do the online scan that I mentioned and post its log here.

The isue of reformatting the hard disk is a long way.

Great. I would like to say one more time that I appreciate your efforts.

This time I couldn't find O2 - BHO: VBRunDLL Class - {197B8CA4-E215-46DD-8F33-E0544A80E5C4} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vbrundll.dll but I found O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Bouncer RunStartup] C:\Program Files\Bouncer\liveupdate.exe 110 and checked it. This time it was successful.

Then I rebooted in safe mode. Again, I could not find C:\WINDOWS\system32\vbrundll.dll. I found C:\Program Files\Bouncer and deleted it.

I rebooted in normal mode. When I did that I got the Spybot S&D Message that Spybot had detected an important registry entry that had been changed. "Category: System Startup global entry, Change: Value deleted, Entry: Bouncer RunStartup, Old Data: C:\Program Files\Bouncer\liveupdate.exe. When trying to close the window, I got another window: Resident-Registry change denied.

I ran the online scan after installing the ActiveX control for it. I took the initiative of checking "Auto Clean" before I scanned. The results of the scan showed Virus: TROJ NAIL.B, Non Cleanable, C:\System Volume Information\_restore{99A258C5-CC18-45E1... I selected Delete and it seemed successful.

I ran Hijackthis. Here is the new log:

By the way, the problem isn't solved. :tazz:

I'm still getting the Error [404] Not Found page every time I try to open a url that my trusting Hijacker doesn't like.

It's nearly 2 am here in cold Melbourne. I'll be reading your next posting in about 5 hours from now.

Hi Calsof,

There is some good news - there is just one file that we need to get rid of !!!

Lets try this -

Reboot the PC in Safe Mode.

Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process :

liveupdate.exe 110

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check the box next to this item and hit 'Fix checked' :

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Bouncer RunStartup] C:\Program Files\Bouncer\liveupdate.exe 110

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\Program Files\Bouncer\liveupdate.exe 110

Reboot the PC in Normal Mode and post a fresh Hijack This log.
