Hello again,

I'm so sorry, but since I don't know if I'm following your instructions properly (I'm not sure if I've understood them), I will have to tell you what I have done step by step.

I logged on in safe mode and double clicked the HijackThis.exe file on the desktop. It had a list of buttons under "New users quickstart". One of them was "Open the Misc Tools section", so I pressed it to open.

In the next view I pressed "Open process manager" under "System Tools".

In the next view, I didn't find liveupdate.exe 110. I found the following:

144 c:\System32\smss.exe
220 c:\System32\winlogon.exe
264 c:\System32\services.exe
276 c:\System32\lsass.exe
416 c:\System32\svchost.exe
524 c:\System32\svchost.exe
740 c:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE
1040 c:\Documents and Settings\calsof\Desktop\HijackThis.exe

So I closed that one and ran HijackThis.I found O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Bouncer RunStartup] C:\Program Files\Bouncer\liveupdate.exe 110 and clicked fix checked.

Then I went into Windows Explorer and typed C:\Program Files\Bouncer. It told me it could not find it.

I went to Search for files and folders and clicked on "All files and folders". I typed "liveupdate" in the "All or part of the file name" box. There was a list of files, mostly from Symantec, but none from Bouncer. I tried one or two other search words, and then closed Search altogether and rebooted to normal mode.

Here is the HijackThis log:

By the way, the problem still hasn't been solved. ;)

I'm still getting the Error [404] Not Found page every time I try to open a url that my Hijacker doesn't like. :tazz:

Thanks again. I appreciate this. ;)

Hi Calsof,

Are you connected to any other PC or internet?? Please disconnect from all other PCs and internet for the fix. Please also disable Microsoft Anti-Spyware and SpyBot S&D for the fix.

I have consulted some experts and lets try this -

A. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

B. Restart your computer in Safe Mode

Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Bouncer

Run Hijack This and check the box next to this item and click on Fix checked -

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Bouncer RunStartup] C:\Program Files\Bouncer\liveupdate.exe 110

Reboot in Normal Mode

C. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

Reactivate Microsoft Anti-Spyware and SpyBot S&D.

Run Hijack This and Post a fresh Hijack This log.

Hello again,

The computer we are trying to fix is a laptop with lan wireless connection, connected to cable internet through a wireless router with another desktop computer. I don't think I can disconnect the desktop without losing my internet connection on the laptop. Should I disconnect it and try connecting with the ethernet cable directly?

Sorry for being so ignorant.

Thanks again.

You need to disconnect only briefly for this fix.

Switch off the router, do the fix and then turn it back on

Hello again,

I followed your detailed instructions in the following way:

I disconnected from the router and internet. I disabled Microsoft Anti-Spyware but I didn't find SpyBot S&D connected.

On the Desktop, I right-clicked My Computer.
I clicked Properties.
I clicked the System Restore tab.
I checked the box "Turn off System Restore on all drives".
Then I clicked Apply, and OK.

I Restarted the computer in Safe Mode

I looked for the folder C:\Program Files\Bouncer but it told me the path is not correct.

I ran Hijack This and checked the box next to O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Bouncer RunStartup] C:\Program Files\Bouncer\liveupdate.exe 110 and clicked on Fix checked -

I Rebooted in Normal Mode

I deactivated Microsoft Anti-Spyware and SpyBot S&D once again

I Turned ON System Restore again.

I rebooted the computer in Normal mode again to reactivate Microsoft Anti-Spyware and SpyBot S&D.

I connected the router and the internet again and Ran Hijack This. Here is the new log.

Bouncer is still there, and my trusting friend is still directing me to the Error [404] page.

What am I doing wrong? I'm so sorry! :tazz:

Lets do it now

Hi Calsof,

Lets try one more method. If it doesnt go this way then probably we have a deeper problem.

Microsoft Anti-Spyware and SpyBot S&D maybe interfering with the fix. So we will uninstall them. But before we uninstall them, I want you to get these files so that these can be installed immediately after the fix is completed. Please download these softwares -

Microsoft Anti-Spyware - here
SpyBot S&D - here

Download this additional file - Fix.zip. Unzip the file fix.bat and save it on your desktop.

Please disconnect from the Internet and disconnect from the other PC. You will need to disconnect from the internet again. Uninstall Microsoft Anti-Spyware and SPyBot S&D in Add or Remove Programs.

Reboot the PC in Safe Mode. Run the file fix.bat.

Run Hijack This and fix the entry -

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Bouncer RunStartup] C:\Program Files\Bouncer\liveupdate.exe 110

Delete the folders -

C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Excludes

Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.

Install Microsoft Anti-Spyware and SpyBot S&D.

Connect to the internet and then update the definition files of both the softwares.

Hi Tampabelle,

I downloaded this software from the desktop PC and sent it to the laptop -

Microsoft Anti-Spyware
SpyBot S&D

I also downloaded this additional file - Fix.zip and sent it to the laptop. I Unzipped the file fix.bat and saved it on my desktop.

I disconnected from the Internet and disconnected from the other PC. I Uninstalled SPyBot S&D in Add or Remove Programs. I got a number of those registry denied popups and finally rebooted so the changes would take place. Then I got a caswnd window telling me "System Ready. Please do not close this window while testing". I closed the window.

I Uninstalled Microsoft Anti-Spyware in Add or Remove Programs.

I rebooted the PC in Safe Mode. I Ran the file fix.bat.

I Ran Hijack This and fixed O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Bouncer RunStartup] C:\Program Files\Bouncer\liveupdate.exe 110

I Deleted the folder C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy
I looked for C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Excludes but I only found three files/folders in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy: Logs, Recovery and Statistics.ini. I did not fined Excludes to delete it.

I then went to Start - Search - For files or folders and typed "Excludes" in the "All or part of the file name" box. I did not find the file/folder there.

I Rebooted the PC in Normal Mode.

I Installed Microsoft Anti-Spyware first and then proceeded to install SpyBot S&D. When I was asked to select Additional Tasks in Spybot Setup, I also selected "Use system settings protection (TeaTimer)". The wizard came up with a popup and I pressed "Create registry backup".

I Connected to the internet, rebooted the system in Normal Mode and then updated the definition files of Microsoft Antispyware. I proceeded to update the Spybot definition files. Everything seemed to go fine.

I ran HijackThis and here is the log:

Bouncer seems to have disappeared from the log but my hijacker is still directing my urls to the Error page [404] Not Found. ;)

Seems I can't get rid of it. :tazz:

I'm so sorry. I don't know if we can do anything about this after all. Your call. I'll do anything you think is necessary, even if it means reformatting. ;)

Thanks again for everything.

Hi Calsof,

Are you having this problem {the 404 page} when you are visiting a number of VALID URLs ??? Can you give some examples??

Just want to make sure of a few programs -

1. Do you have some phonetic software installed??

2. There is a program running called CASclient. Do you know anything about it ??

There is one more thing we can try at this time, pending your response -

Download this file - Hoster.zip. Unzip the file. Run Hoster.exe and click on "Restore Original Hosts".

Run Hijack This and fix the following item -

O4 - Global Startup: BounceBack Launcher.lnk = ?

Hello again Tampabelle,

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply. The time difference, as well as some work this morning is my only excuse.

Let me first answer your questions as best I can:

1) The [404] page comes up with valid url's, the same ones I can actually access from the other computer. I thought the same thing as you, so I tried the addresses on this computer before I decided this was the hijacker at work. They are actually download sites for antispyware protection such as ewido. That is why every time you have told me to download something for the fix, such as fix.zip etc, I have had to download it from this computer and send it to myself as a file to the other computer. Then I have been bypassing my email security settings in order to download it onto the laptop. Otherwise, I can't access any of the urls pointing to fixes, downloads of antispyware etc.

2) As far as I know, I don't have any phonetic software installed. Nonetheless, I won't swear to it because the computer was actually prepared for my by ACER who have given me only two Recovery CDs. So I don't know if something was packed in it before I got it.

3) I'm not making your life any easier with this one, but I haven't got a clue what CASclient is and if it is something that was installed before I got the computer, or if it is something I installed myself. If I knew what it does, maybe I could tell you, but I checked on Google and I didn't make any sense of what it does and whether I would have installed it myself.

I have to tell you this, before you decide if we are going to try this fix. I've only had the laptop for about a month. I have backed everything up in this computer and I have been ready for the possibility of reformatting. I will happily do as you say whenever you are ready.

Thanks a million.
Regards,
calsof.

Hi Calsof,

The casclient.exe file is of interest to us because we havent found too many references to it.

Would it be possible for you to mail it to my colleague here at [email protected]? If you can zip the file before mailing it, it would prevent any accidents.

I am still discussing your issue with others here. The opinion is that there might be some more spyware which is preventing you from accessing specific pages and this could be a possible file.
