My microphone no longer works in steam, and no one has an answer.

So I've posted multiple places and no one has replied to my situation. All the googling in the world hasn't helped and my friends can't figure it out. I'm going to copy pasta my post to steam in hopes that someone here will be able to find a solution. Thank you everyone who helps! :)

So. My headset works. My headset is happy. The one day I'm playing CS:S and want to rebind my talk key from my middle mouse button. This begins the multi-month struggle to get my mic to work in steam.

At first, I couldn't get my mic to work at all, I had changed a setting or something causing it to stop working. Then I got it to work in everything but steam, with the exception of voice chatting with friends.

The mic test doesn't work with my headset mic or my laptop mic, although the weird thing is that it works when sound is playing in my headphones. Testing it during then causes the mic test to work (nothing I say works), but also makes every sound I hear to echo.

These are the settings for my mic, I don't think anything here is making it not work. Does anybody have any solutions?

I've looked at the steam guides, and weird work-arounds and googled my heart content, and nothing seems to be working.

Please provide information about your computer, this includes is it a notebook or desktop, is it a custom build or brand name such as Dell or HP, if it is a brand name provide the model name or series number (not serial) if a custom build post the brand and model name or number for the MB, add on video card if one is used and the PSU (power supply unit) providing these details will enable us to better assist you.

What do you show in devise Manager?? Have you up dated your sound drivers??

Just shooting in the dark!!

What's funny is I was planning on adding all that to my post when I came this site site, seeing as it's standard for forums, but I completely forgot. Anyways, this is my info:

I have a ASUS G46VW-BHI5N43 (link for more info).

  • Intel Core i5 3210M (2.50GHz)

  • 8GB Memory 750GB HDD

  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M

  • 1366 x 768

  • Windows 8 64-Bit

Device Manager looks normal, and I've done the standard deleting them then checking for updates and having them reinstalled. Nothing works. As I said before, my mic works in every other program, just doesn't with steam. Oh, and I've reinstalled steam too.

In my opinion, there is water, ie moisture, in steam, and steam and electronics do not make for a happy situation.  I would steer clear of it if I could.
