That sounds good, Joanne. After completing the instructions above, only a few steps to remove the tools we've used remain. I would then suggest passing the computer back over. :)

Adobe...  The link gives me this message... Flash Player is integrated with Internet Explorer in Windows 8.
You do not need to install Flash Player.  What should I do???  I won't delete old version until you reply.  Thanks Adam.

Hi Joanne,

Adobe Flash Player is built into Internet Explorer in Windows 8.

What should I do???  I won't delete old version until you reply.  Thanks Adam.

Please check for and install the latest Windows Updates. After installation (or confirming there are no new updates), please proceed by removing the outdated version as instructed in STEP 2.

I believe I've completed your steps.  I've used it a bit and it seems good.  :)  Also, we use CCleaner on this pc for junk folders and to keep the registry clean, is that ok???

Hi Joanne,

I believe I've completed your steps.  I've used it a bit and it seems good.

Very good. I'm glad to hear!

Also, we use CCleaner on this pc for junk folders and to keep the registry clean, is that ok???

Using CCleaner to clean temp files and Internet browser caches/cookies is perfectly fine. However, I would suggest you avoid the built-in registry cleaner. Registry cleaners/optimization tools are potentially harmful, and may do more damage than good. Please refer to the following article for further information.

If you wish to remove Spybot, and replace Ad-Aware, I recommend following the steps below. You may find an improvement in performance after uninstalling the aforementioned software. Avast! anti-virus is my recommend choice of free anti-virus; however, if you would like a list of recommended free anti-virus software prior to installing a new anti-virus then that is fine; I am more than happy to provide multiple choices.

  • Press the Windows Key pdKOQKY.png + s on your keyboard at the same time. Type restore and click Create a restore point. Click Create, type a name and follow the prompts.
  • Press the Windows Key pdKOQKY.png + r on your keyboard at the same time. Type appwiz.cpl and click OK.
  • Search for Spybot, right-click and click Uninstall. Follow the prompts.
  • Download the avast! anti-virus installation file to your desktop. Do not run the programme yet.
  • Disconnect from the Internet, ensuring WiFi is not set to connect to a network automatically.
  • Press the Windows Key pdKOQKY.png + r on your keyboard at the same time. Type appwiz.cpl and click OK.
  • Search for Ad-Aware, right-click and click Uninstall. Follow the prompts, and reboot your computer afterwards.
  • Please refer to the following article if issues arise during the uninstallation.
  • Note: Once uninstalled, you should remain disconnected from the Internet.
  • After rebooting, locate the avast! anti-virus installation file on your desktop, and double-click it.
  • Note: Watch out for a bundled offer to install Google Chrome/Toolbar. Uncheck any such offer if you do not wish to install the software.
  • I recommend opting for a custom installation, and only selecting components you intend to use. For example, I would recommend unchecking the following:
    • Mail Shield (if you do not use an Email client - eg. Mozilla Thunderbird).
    • avast! Remote Assistance (if you intend on using online communities for malware-related problems).
    • SecureLine (if you do not connect to unsecure wireless networks).
    • avast! gadget.
    • Any languages other than the language you intend to use.
  • Follow through with the installation process. Once completere-connect to the Internet. Ensure the programme is updated by visiting theSettings tab.
  • You will be prompted to run a scan. Only do so once avast! is updated.
  • You will be required to register. This is a simple (free) process, and only requires your email-address, and other basic information.
  • Voice notifications can be disabled by clicking Settings > Sounds > Disable avast! sounds OK.

After completing the above (or deciding to stick with Spybot/Ad-Aware), please complete the following steps to remove the tools we have used. Instructions on manually uninstalling ESET Online Scan can be found at the bottom of STEP 2.

STEP 1
Z2qgMOy.png OTL

  • Please download OTL and save the file to your desktop.
  • Double-click OTL.exe to run the programme. Ensure all other windows are closed
  • Copy the entire contents of the codebox below and paste into the 1wDyQ2v.png textbox.
    :OTL

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [emptyjava]
    [clearallrestorepoints]
  • Click the j7yFJut.png button.
  • Let the programme run and reboot your computer if prompted

STEP 2
AFZxnZc.jpg DelFix

  • Please download DelFix and save the file to your Desktop.
  • Double-click DelFix.exe to run the programme.
  • Place a checkmark next to the following items:
    • Activate UAC
    • Remove disinfection tools
    • Create registry backup
    • Reset System Settings
  • Click the Run button.

-- This will remove the specialised tools we used to disinfect your system. Any leftover logs, files, folders or tools remaining on your Desktop which were not removed can be deleted manually (right-click the file + delete). ESET Online Scan can be uninstalled manually (if still present) by typing appwiz.cpl, clicking OK, searching for ESET and double-clicking.

--- Malwarebytes Anti-Malware will still be present on your computer. I recommend keeping this programme, updating and scanning with it once a week to maintain security on your computer. If you do not wish to keep this programme on your computer, you can uninstall it by pressing the Windows Key pdKOQKY.png + r on your keyboard at the same time, typing appwiz.cpl, clicking OK and searching for Malwarebytes.

  • 6YRrgUC.png Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium incorporates real-time protection and is designed to run alongside your anti-virus.
  • j1OLIec.png SpywareBlaster is a form of passive protection, designed to block the actions of malicious websites and tracking cookies.
  • A5RLVbX.png CCleaner (portable) is a handy temp file cleaner. Avoid the built-in registry cleaner => see this article for information.

Hi Joanne,

Please connect to the Internet, and retry the installation.

If you receive the error again, please download the avast! removal tool, run it, and then attempt to install avast! (whilst connected to the Internet).

omgoodness... nothing is working...  I connected to the internet, tried to install advast...  had to register.  Went to Comcast.net, put in my credentials and it opens a new tab titled Xfinity Connect and just shows a blue circle... nothing else.  Can't access my email to open Advast.  I'm going to register it on another computer and continue.

sigh

Avast found a threat. Now it is scanning the "boot sector"? If I remember correctly. Will continue in the morning.

OTL won't download either.  It's like there is a setting that is keeping redirects from enabling... does that make sense?
