Running Windows XP.
Hardwre : wireless modem seems fine.
However it is not automatically locating networks and saying
"No wireless networks were found in range."

Are you sure that it is not the computer that has the issue.

Have you tried a hard reset of the wireless device by leaving it unplugged for 5 minutes or so.

Had any hardware or software changes been made to a previously working device.

 

Please provide information about your computer, this includes is it a notebook or desktop, is it a custom build or brand name such as Dell or HP, if it is a brand name provide the model name or series number (not serial) if a custom build post the brand and model name or number for as much of the hardware as you can, providing these details will enable us to better assist you.

Yes I have done that and no h/s changes.
It's a Dell laptop Latitude D620.
The computer is definitely the problem.

Sorry for the delay, I had a rather hectic day yesterday and didn't touch a computer at all 

 

Thanks for clarifying that it is the notebook that has the problem 

 

Couple of questions;

Is the wireless LED lit up on the notebook.

Is there a yellow ! or red X against the wireless device in the Device Manager.

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode with Networking.

Have you checked that the wireless device has not been disabled in the BIOS.

Have you tried using the notebook at a friends or relatives where there is a wireless network available.

Red x on icon.
No wireless LED light.
Checked BIOS = ENABLED
DON'T know how to do safe boot.

No wireless LED could be a bad sign   please try the following;

Click "Start | All Program | Dell | Dell Wireless | Dell Wireless WLAN Card Utility" if the light remains off.

Click "Enable Radio" and then click "OK."

 

Restart the computer and keep tapping the F8 key where you should be given the option to boot into Safe Mode with Networking in the Advanced boot options.

Did you try tapping the F8 key when you restarted the computer, it must be done before the Dell splash screen appears and up to the point before Windows loads, it can sometimes be tricky and take a few attempts.

Have tried it at 2 libraries and the same.

I booted into safe mode and when I go the
Dell wireless screen it shows "enable radio" clicked on and then immediately clicked off.
Again, it does not allow me to enable radio.

This suggests that the wireless card has failed and needs to be replaced, card here and fitting tutorial here

 

Do you happen to know anyone that has a wireless USB type dongle that you could try, an example device here

 

 

Go to Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

 

Type the following command:

 

IPCONFIG /ALL

 

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then press Enter.

Copy/Paste the results into your next reply for us please.

What AV protection and Firewall do you have.
