Hello,

I have a 7+ year old computer that is currently running windows 7.  My computer is very slow and when I open the task manager to find out if something is running that could be causing it to run slowly it shows me several processes, I dont know anything about them so I am lost there.  My CPU usage is usually very high and the physical memory percent is also extremely high.  I have tried to delete as much as I can that I no longer use and was trying to just return the computer to the factory settings and start all over again, but I was unable to do that.  I read some instructions on how to return the computer to factory settings and I could not find the option when I looked for it in the ways I was instructed.  Any help that you can give me to help return my computer to usable speeds would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much,

Eric

Hello epepps14 :)

First of all, I just want to tell you that we might not be able to make your computer run faster as you said it yourself, you have a 7 years old computer running Windows 7 and it might not be "Windows 7 Ready" nor have the hardware to run it.
Are you able to give your computer specifications (hardware) as well as what edition and version of Windows 7 you are running precisely ? If you don't know how, just post back and I'll post detailled instructions on how you can provide us these information :)

Hello,

I have been using windows 7 for a few years now and it has been running smoothly at times and then it slows down significantly.  My computer is a Dell Inspiron E1705, for my processor it says that it is an Intel Core2 CPU T7200 @ 2.00GHz, 32 bit operating system.  I have windows 7 home premium service pack 1.  Let me know if you need any other information.

Thanks

How much memory do you have?

Also, lets see what is installed and running:

Download and install CCleaner from the following link: CCleaner - Standard

During installation, uncheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar.

Start CCleaner. Click on Tools (ICON) and Select the following BUTTONS to create two (2) text files:

  • Uninstall > Save to text file (install) – bottom right corner of app window
  • Startup > Save to text file (startup)

Locate and open each saved file in the ‘Documents’ FOLDER:

  • Copy and paste the contents of each file into your next post (2 files).

I suggest you to uninstall the following programs as they're just bloating your system :
  • Documentation & Support Launcher
  • Games, Music, & Photos Launcher
  • MediaDirect
  • User's Guides
  • Yahoo! Toolbar
  • DellSupport
Also please uninstall the following programs and update them to their latest version :You can disable the following on Startup :
  • FlashPlayerUpdate Adobe Systems Incorporated

Hey qqamresh !

Just to inform you that I disagree a bit with your solution. Yes installing a good Antivirus is always one of the first thing to do on a computer, however installing one will not help you increase the performance of a computer, just so you know. Kaspersky by the way isn't a light resources Antivirus and I know this from experience as I've been using their products for 7 years. Its however an excellent product. AVG might be free but its bloated, have low detection rate and however all comes with a spyware (their toolbar) so I wouldn't recommend it at all. As for Quick Heal, I don't consider it as an efficient Antivirus choice at all.

Hope you understand my point.

To improve performance.

1. Uninstall anything from Norton or Symantec.

2. Install Microsoft Security Essentials, a good, light weight AV.

3. Install CCleaner Slim. Run it and let it clean up the hard drive of accumulated junk files.

3. Increase the RAM to at least 2GB, 4GB is better. According to the Users Guide:

You can use the Crucial System Scanner > http://www.crucial.c...n/systemscanner which  will recommend the correct memory for your system.

You do not have to buy from the site.
