well I installed it a few hours ago, and so far so good, it runs games awesomely on max settings (that are multi threaded for processors) compared to my old one. Took some time to figure out the extra power cables, but it came with adapters and now both sockets have power to them.

War thunder and Planetside run awesome, but world of tanks and a few others are better, but they don't get 60 fps on max, or even a bit lower. I think its because they aren't multi threaded or something. But as stated, so far its awesome!

*Edit* quick question, what is a normal temperature for a card under stress? Using Open hardware monitor, it says my card is 65-69C when playing war thunder maxed.

and another off topic question, it says in OPH too, that I only have 7.9GB usable ram when I have 12 installed, and windows can see it in the properties screen.

oh and by multi threaded, I mean not utilizing all 4 of my cores. and even then, some games I know are multi threaded, the performance monitor says I only use up to 50% of my processor in high stress situations. weird...

Glad you are happy with the new card  :)

Benchmark the new card with Valley Benchmark (free) from here

All video cards are different but your temps are not high considering it was being maxed out.

Usable Ram means that is what is not being used atm, Windows and other software will be using the remainder of the Ram.

I am not a hardcore gamer but to my knowledge there is at present no game that constantly requires the use of all 4 cores on a quad CPU and most games will run happily on two cores and only use a third core when maxed out, War Thunder is a good example of this as the recommended CPU is a dual core 2.4GHz CPU, System Requirements Lab is a good source for this type of information, see here

ah ok, thanks for the answers.

About the CPU I mostly meant in games like Guild Wars 2.

http://www.systemreq...rs-2/11297/?p=a

I don't know if you will understand  what I mean but,  I can have the options maxed, and the character model limit (how many characters allowed on screen at once) to max in calmer areas with 20 or less people. But when I am "zerging" world bosses when there are a hundred or more players, my FPS goes down...obviously. But the weird thing is, the FPS hardly changes at all no matter what setting I have the character model limit on. My performance monitor says, during the most heated battles with at least a hundred people, that my CPU goes up to 50% but no higher, and the hardware monitor says that the temps get up to 78C on the processor, and 65C on the graphics card. I just find it strange that it almost refuses to go past 50% and still gets that hot.

The GPU and CPU both share the load when it comes to graphics/video etc, the GPU shoulders most of the responsibility though and that is why high end cards require their own power supply from the PSU the same as the CPU does in the form of the 4 or now more commonly used 8 pin ATX power supply, remember that it is the GPU that produces the graphics and not the CPU, the processor sends the data but the GPU must then decode the data and reproduce it on one or more displays.

What sort of case cooling do you have.

For the most effective cooling you should have an induction fan at the front to draw in cool, clean air and a rear exhaust fan to expel the heated air from the inside of the case, good/tidy cable management is also a must have.

Are you using VSync when gaming, if not see here

97C is the maximum safe temp for your GPU when underload and as long as it does not consistently go over 80C it will be fine, more importantly what are the temps when the computer is idle as in only booted into Windows.

Huh...well every time I ask someone that about GW2 and a few other games they always say "This game is more CPU intensive than GPU", so can I just dismiss that?

well I am an idiot and probably should have gotten it fixed a long time ago... but there was a small fan in the front of the tower, below the slots for hard drives that's bearing broke/is lose or something, and made an extremely loud noise, and at the time I didn't have the funds to get it repaired so I just unplugged it from the motherboard to prevent it from turning on and forgot about it. I never thought about it being there to bring in cool air, I thought it was just another fan :( need to get that fixed then.....

There is a fan on the CPU GPU and PSU (obviusly) and one in the rear of the PC right next to the CPU.

I usually only use Vsync in games that I consistently get 60FPS+ and screentear, If below 60FPS I leave it off. Should I turn adaptive on in global settings?

The idle temps are fine, not having played anything for an hour or two, and just having the PC on downloading stuff, I am sitting at ~48C CPU temp and ~36C GPU. These are actually on the colder side aren't they?

The best answer to your question is to make sure that your system specs meet or surpass the system requirements stipulated by the software provider, I for one do not get into debates regarding what others may have said elsewhere preferring to only deal with facts that can be substantiated with direct evidence  ;)

You should explore the card settings until you determine which are the best for any particular game or application.

The idle temps of the computer hardware in general will be affected by the ambient room temps where the computer is used, how hot or cold is it there.

We only know that the processor is an i7 but if you tell us the exact one we can check what the operating temps should be.

Have you run Valley Benchmark.

Open hardware monitor says it is an i7 920:

I may run that eventually, but not at the moment, thanks for telling me about it though.

The max safe thermal footprint is 67.9°C  which would shut your computer down if exceeded.

Going offline now as I have a function to attend this evening and may not be back until Sunday am UK time when we can take a closer look, sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause.

Download Speedfan and install it.  Once it's installed, run the program and post here the information it shows.  The information I want you to post is the stuff that is circled in the example picture I have attached.

If you are running on a vista machine, please go to where you installed the program and run the program as administrator.

speedfan.png

(this is a screenshot from a vista machine)

Download then run HWMonitor and post a screenshot so that we have a comparison to the Speedfan results, details from here

To capture and post a screenshot;

Click on the ALT key + PRT SCR key..its on the top row..right hand side..now click on start...all programs...accessories...paint....left click in the white area ...press CTRL + V...click on file...click on save...save it to your desktop...name it something related to the screen your capturing... BE SURE TO SAVE IT AS A .JPG ...otherwise it may be to big to upload... then after typing in any response you have... click on browse...desktop...find the screenshot..select it and click on the upload button...then on the lower left...after it says upload successful...click on add reply like you normally would.

Screenshot instructions are provided to assist those that may read this topic but are not yet aware of the “how to”.
