Avast download frustration

I wanted to run Avast as my anti virus program. I have downloaded it several times and experienced different problems each time. Since you can't get the software from Avast directly for the free version, is there a better source. I thought the last one took but then it tried a first time scan and reported it could not proceed due to Windows errors. Does WIN7 work with Avast?

Avast works on windows 7. What exactly is the error you're getting ?

I'd run the avast clean tool Here

Then reinstall Avast from Here

What Anti Virus was on the machine and did you uninstall it completely ?
