Hi all,

I purchased a new laptop last year, Sony Vaio T Series Ultrabook running Windows 8. I noticed in the recent weeks that the laptop does not shut down anymore. When I prompt the laptop to shut down it goes into the "lock" mode (user log in) and stays on. It will only power down when I hold the "power" key. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a Windows 8 issue?  a Sony issue?

Any help is most appreciated. Thank you!

Hi s0nginmyheart :)

When your Windows goes to the login screen, does it display the shutdown message ? Or does it ask you to press Ctrl + Alt + Del to login or ask you to pick a user, etc. ?

It goes to back to the main user log in screen (as if I were to "log out" of my current user).

What happens when you pick to "Restart" your computer and not "Shut down" ?

I think this is how Windows 8 works to be honest. The shutdown button only brings you to the lockscreen. Where are you pressing that button, from which menu ?
Also, that "issue" isn't present in Windows 8.1, which I suggest you to upgrade to and it will be free for you as you already own Windows 8 :

I checked and I am on 8.1, sorry about that. I also did a Windows Update to see if that might solve the issue. However, I am still experiencing the shut down issues (as of last night).

Oh and this is how I shut down:

Start > Power Options (icon) > Shut Down

I can't show you exemples as I'm not home on my Windows 8.1 but, this option can be changed under "Power Options", accessible from the Control Panel. Under that, click on "Change power button behaviors/options". It should be there.
