Hi everyone
I hope this is the right forum for my problem, if not, feel free to move this topic.

I just found an old book which I purcharsed, but never really used because of an error occuring every time I try to use the LiveCD of the book. The book's name is "Hacking - The art of exploitation". The Ubuntu Linux based LiveCD is used to run the code and also contains code examples.

I put the CD into my PC and boot it. An screen occurs where I am able to make some choices(i.e. booting the LiveCD, booting from the hard disk). I choose the option to boot the LiveCD and a black screen occurs. After that the message "Loading, please wait..." is displayed. A few seconds later a next message is displayed: "[ 27.892000] Buffer I/O error on device fd0, logical block 0"

This error continues, just with a different number at the beginning.
Do you have any solutions for this? :headscratch:

Gday.

A possible cause.   The installer is looking for RAM to use for running Ubuntu live and is seeing a FDD as first boot device, which does not contain RAM.

Possible fix.   Restart the computer and enter the BIOS.   Look for Boot devices, if a FDD is listed, but you don't have one install, click on it and change it's status to disabled.

If you do have a FDD installed, under boot priority, move it to below the OS drive.

Press F!0 (and at the prompt, confirm,  save changes and exit.

Whichever flavour of Ubuntu you have, I advice updating to to the latest version and burn a new Live CD or USB stick.

You may find using a Live Puppy Linux Distro more friendly and easer to learn/use, again, there are many to choose from > http://puppylinux.or...est Release.htm

If you use a DVD, do not finalize the burn, that way you can save your user profile  and also files.

Thanks for your reply iammykyl!

The first boot device is a CD, the second is my Hard Disk and the third is disabled. The error still occurs.

Whichever flavour of Ubuntu you have, I advice updating to to the latest version and burn a new Live CD or USB stick.

The CD came with the book, that's why I first would like to try to use this one.

I once tried to use a different LiveCD, but I got stuck after a few pages because the assembler code didn't conform to the code displayed in the book...

There is also an option "Check CD for defects" and "Memory test". Could this help?

Update:
I got the original .iso from the book's publisher's website. Burned a USB stick, but when I boot it, the following error occurs two times: "sda: assuming drive cache: write through"

After that the error from above come up again... :smashcomp:

I'll try to set up a VM, maybe this works :headscratch:

Guess what: It works with VMware Player! :spoton:

I used the original CD, installed VMware Player and started the VM this way: http://www.nostarch.com/hackingCD.htm.

It's the publisher's website, where you also can get the original .iso. Maybe this helps some people who might have the same problem.

The topic can be closed, thanks for you help iammykyl!
