Backstory:

I have 2 harddrives in my laptop. My main one with windows 7 installed is a 232GB INTEL SSDSC2MH250A2 (SSD). I use my Seagate ST9750420AS for storage. I decided to run defraggler on it since it was 17% fragmented. I left it over night but someone unplugged my laptop so I think the battery drained while it was still running. Everything seemed fine so I restarted defraggler only for my computer to abort and stop recognizing my drive. It took a few restarts to get it to be recognized again when I decided to try and finish the defragmentation using the built in windows defragmenter which seemed to work fine. I can access my drive and everything seems to be fine except:

I tried running seatools on it to make sure the disk was ok. The SMART test passed but the Short Drive Self Test failed. I attached the log below. I tried running Seatools for Dos but couldnt get it to boot from cd or USB (i eventually did using Ultimate Boot CD but it wouldnt recognize my drive). I tried running HDDScan (Version 3.3 wouldn't start for some reason (The process shows up in my task manager but interface doesnt show) so I had to use version 3.1) and same thing. I attached both logs below.

 

I am able to access my drive and all the files on it (or all the files I've tried so far) but I'm conserned that the Short Drive Self Test is failing. Could really use some help/advice.

You should never defrag an SSD. Don't even think about it. The reason is that physical data placement on an SSD is handled solely by the SSD's firmware, and what it reports to Windows is NOT how the data is actually stored on the SSD.

This means that the physical data placement a defragger shows in it's fancy sector chart has nothing to do with reality. The data is NOT where Windows thinks it is, and Windows has no control over where the data is actually placed.

To even out usage on its internal memory chips SSD firmware intentionally splits data up across all of the SSD's memory chips, and it also moves data around on these chips when it isn't busy reading or writing (in an attempt to even out chip usage.)

Windows never sees any of this, so if you do a defrag Windows will simply cause a whole bunch of needless I/O to the SSD and this will do nothing except decrease the useful life of the SSD.

I should of been more clear, I didnt defrag my SSD. I defraged my HDD. My SSD (which houses my OS) is in tip top shape.

Hello! That's good to hear. Not good to hear you failed Short Dive Test. I have a seagate 1TB external drive and it passes all the tests.

Hello! Yepers !! That's not good at all. I wouldn't be putting any thing on that drive that I didn't want to lose.

I've never had a drive fail seagate's test. I have not been able to get the seatool dos to work however. It can't find my drive. Will boot but won't find the drive.

Does anyone have any advice? Is there a way of repairing my drive (perferably without sending it in to seagate)?
