Right now i have 2 Western Digital HDD C: an D: , i was thinking of getting a SSD for now to replace the drive my operating system is on.

 

This original HDD is a SATA-III 6.0Gb/s 64MB Cache, second hdd is the same.

 

Eventually i will replace the second. These drives are still so expensive when getting up in GB.

 

Is there certain things to consider for it to be compatible with my system, except the connection,SATA.

Also fitting properly in case, 2.5" in bays where the original HDD was.

There isn't anything to worry about regarding compatability.

The only other issue like you mentioned would be the mounting. You will probably need a bracket such as

Thanks for the response.

Yes this was one of my concerns, fitting it in the drive bay.

 

May have different types of brackets i will look more.

 

Have to take measurements, i have 3 bay slots on this tower.

 I have more questions on this thread.

 

When first setting up a new SSD is it any different then setting up an HDD Drive ?

 

I mean any special steps to do, software or drivers i may need.

 

I have everything backed up i need, driver to, i also have the original Operating system disc. which i would usually do a clean install.

 

Anything in BIOS settings, i run right now at AHCI mode, do i keep it that way, i would assume so because other should be IDE ?

It is for all intents and purposes, exactly the same as a hard drive. Just stored differently internally.

AHCI would be the optimal setting, apart from that, anything else would be the same as for any hard drive.

Just not recommended to defrag SSD's because they store data differently due to the limited write cycles.

O.K. thank you, been in process of looking for best prices on some SSD's.

You mean never, ever Defrag ? Or not as much.

I got my answer, i get it now see the reasons not to.

 

Wonder how long an SSD can last, from writing, erasing (deleting) and rewriting.

 

Compared to a HDD.

Which one would be better for having the operating system on.

 

Most likely buy a second one, would want one for my OS system one for other stuff, like PC games.

One thing in reading that concerned me was controllers drivers, i have Intel now do i change this or does drive come with other, not to sure on this subject ?

The controller driver in your system that is powering your hard drive will work the same for the SSD.

 

There is an on board controller for the SSD but that isn't something you have to worry about as its all part of the electrickery.

 

The crucial 512 is a bit of a beast from what I can see (I haven't actually used one) and is among the fastest as well.

 

As regarding mounting, don't worry too much about which one you get, it's only a bracket, as long as it fits then it will do its job. The SSD's weigh almost nothing so it doens't have to hold much more than its own weight.

 

I've held one in just screwing one side to the hard drive slot before and it holds in place perfectly. It just upsets my OCD not to have it mounted properly.

Yes, i can't remember if they mentioned Marvell controller in an article for the Crucial SSD.

 

And yes i did my research on SSD's this has been getting good ratings for a low budget Drive.

I was looking for one for my budget.

 

Yeah my concern was that it will fit in my bay looking at the image of the bracket online and the dimensions.

 

Back to controller drivers, my system also uses what's called Intel Management interface, not sure if i need to reinstall this software it runs in backround.?

 

I have the drivers for the controllers and i am most likely going to do a clean install of my Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit again, rather then a making an image.
