I would choose PCSPECIALIST to do the build.   Mesh does look good but a personal bios here, I like MSI for GPUs, not for MBs.   There is a board on pcspecialist that has 8 SATA 6Gbs ports, 6 by Intel + 2 by Asmidia, they are dedicates to SATA HDDs and can't be used for optical drives, that no a problem though. > http://www.asus.com/..._GENE/overview/

Don't know how many HDD you have, so included one in the builds.   I would forgo the liquid cooling, the stock cooler does the job well. FFYI.   Where a CPU is supplied with a cooling solution, this from both Intel and AMD, if you install an alternative solution, you will void the 3 year warranty, so if damage occurs, you will have no legal claim.   You can, at the time of purchase, take out insurance for a one time only replacement CPU.

 

If you do decide to build your own, I would use the Asrock Extreme6.

The motherboard, processor and cooler aren't half as difficult to install as I thought. The rest I am quite comfortable with. I am half tempted to do it myself. I did enquire at a trusted local computer shop and they said they would install the parts for £39 untested or £59 tested.

 

I was a bit dubious about installing a water cooler in a computer. I know it is probably unlikely they will leak but water and electricals don't mix. I am happy to install fans.

Yes, the CPU install is the most critical, the rest is fairly streight forward, all plugs and sockets have keyways, so unless you use a hammer to drive a plug into the wrong socket, you should be sweet. 

I don't want to drive you crazy with choices.

This build will give you better performance than the other configurations, even if you get the local shop to build, still cheaper than Mesh.

Whoever does the build, before loading the OS, some questions to answer.

How many drives do you intend installing?

Will you be configuring any type of RAID array? 

Have you got any programs you need ready to install to a new rig?

I have just calculated that I will have 2X 3tb SATA3 (this includes the one I will be purchasing) drives 1X 2TB SATA 3 Drive and 2X 256mb SSD drives. So 5 drives altogether.

 

I never considered RAID before. I have never had RAID in the past. Please tell me more. I basically know what it is but not much about it.

 

I have AVG Premium, AntiSpyware Premium and a few other premium software but I have download links and keys for all of them.

 

I also already have Windows 8.1.   I was considering getting another copy but my mother already has Windows 7 so I can use my existing copy of Windows 8 now. (she is having my old build).

I don't need a graphics card that expensive really. I have gone with the same card but the model below.

 

I have changed the RAM. Please advise me on this. Does a higher speed necessarily mean a faster and better RAM?

 

I also whacked in a blu ray reader/writer. I don't need another CD player.

 

I also changed the HDD from 1 TB to 3 TB.

RE. RAID.   As you are using a SSD for the Boot drive, not required.

Other types could be used, only if the software can be configred to use it,

The offer was a lightening deal on Amazon and was only on for a day so I snapped it up at £149.99.

 

That leaves me with my existing 256gb SSD which I would put my Operating system on and the 512gb SSD (which was going to be a 256gb) which i was going to fill with games and STEAM.

Well done, you do have to strike while the iron is hot.

 

You will need to check this with the Steam community as I do not use it.   I thought, your games are stored on a large spinner, Games have to played from the OS drive (SSD), Steam Mover is used to move the most current favourite gemes from storage to the OS, when you decide to play different games, swap them over.

If this is correct, I would use the largest SSD for the OS, a 1TB spinner would be more than enough for game storage, use the smaller SSD elsewhere in the system.

Just to let you know that I successfully built my own PC and am very happy with it so far. There are a few minor issues to sort out like a fan not working and two out of three fans have no LED but I am sure I will work out what is going on. Just got to tidy up the wires now.

Which fan is not working correctly? how is it connected?

I have all the fans working now. The large fan at the top of the case seems to be working with the fan controller on the case. I am not sure if the others are being controlled by the controller or not. Are they meant to? There are no LED lights on any of the four fans apart from one in front of the hard drives and that can be turned off and on by the case button. To be honest I think it is more hassle than its worth to get them working. I'm really not bothered. I was left with two fan leads with two pin connectors. I couldn't see where they had to go though. Somebody said they go straight in to the fan but I can't see how that is possible.

As with most case manufacturers, the guides leave a lot to be desired.   I will have a look and get back to you.

Thanks, there are a couple of really useful diagrams there that should help me. I was thinking of rotating the drive bays anyway so that will give me an excuse to disconnect the fans and try again. Although saying that I will probably have to cut a few cable ties!
