Hi Jeff, I have been talking to Donna about your issue.
Can you try something for me please.

The black menu that you got to before that did not have repair your computer listed. Can you get back to that by pressing F8 on boot up and select safe mode with command prompt.

When loaded, you should get your logon screen. Log in with the account that normally says "user profile service failed the login".

When logged in, you should get a black box with some text in.

If that happens, can you post back here please.

Thank you ruggie_uk.

Hi Jeff. Please follow the advice of my associate, ruggie_uk. He has a bit more experience than I concerning user accounts. If anyone else posts any advice, please ignore the advice unless ruggie_uk or I give you the go ahead to act upon that advice.

Could you tell us which Anti-Virus you have installed?

Thank you,
Donna :)

Hi Jeff.

Can you type:

regedit

and then press enter.

When the registry editor window appears, right click on the very top  icon of the tree that says Computer. Then select export.

Choose a location and file name to save a backup of the registry before we make any changes.

Once that is done.

Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Currentversion\Profilelist

You should get a few items listed looking something like this:

S-1-5-18

S-1-5-19

S-1-5-20

S-1-5-21-3403587698-1463315680-4170228893-1001

S-1-5-21-3403587698-1463315680-4170228893-1001.bak

See the ones I have bolded, they are identical but one has a .bak after it.

Do you have a pair like this?

This is the backup procedure. Do it now.

When the registry editor window appears, right click on the very top  icon of the tree that says Computer. Then select export.

Choose a location and file name to save a backup of the registry before we make any changes.

Once that is done:

  • Right click the entry that does NOT have .bak and click delete.
  • Then right click the other one with .bak and click rename.
  • Delete the .bak at the end of the line.

Once done, you can reboot the PC and that account should now log on as normal.

Yes it's a manual way of saving the registry in case anything goes wrong and we need to restore it.

So next it is the delete the registry key and then rename the other one.

Because the alt-f10 didn't work, the only other option for a full factory restore would be:

To start your system restore follow the below steps:

  1. Click on the Start menu and click All Programs.
  2. In the program list click the Acer folder, then click the Acer eRecovery Management icon.
  3. Windows User Account Control may ask for your permission to run this program, click Yes.
  4. From the Acer eRecovery Management window on the left click Restore, then click Completely Restore System to Factory Defaults.
  5. On the Confirmation screen, select Yes and click Start
  6. Finally click OK to confirm restoration and then your computer will restart.
  7. After the computer restarts click Next if you agree to the notice on your screen.
Note: The notice is informing you that all your data will be erased. If you have not backed up your data click Cancel now.
  8. Next you get a final confirmation screen. Click Next, then click OK to start the recovery process.
  9. The recovery may take a while to finish. You will get a confirmation screen when it is finished.
  10. Click OK to restart your computer.

Now I have a sneaky suspiction that you may not have the acer software installed because of the alt-f10 not working. If this is the case then it gets a lot more awkward.

Do you have the acer recovery listed in program files?

I believe this computer may have been reinstalled manually at some point. In which case tehre will be no option to restore to factory.

If you have access to a Vista disk then you could reinstall using that.

Without that then the best option would be to manually clean up the system.

It will take a while but it isn't hard to do. You will have to uninstall any unwanted programs, make sure it is up to date and do a bit of general housekeeping. The upside is you won't have to locate drivers etc for the system.

I will be out now for the rest of the evening, but if Donna comes back online, maybe she can help you with some steps to follow. If not I can continue tomorrow.

I was afraid of that. :(

Let me see where you guys are at with this. I can proceed with the cleanup, though we will need to do that in the removal forum.

Back in a flash! :)
