I have a HP Pavilion Elite e9290f desktop PC with 9 GB of Ram and a quad core Intel i7 cpu @ 2.67 GHz.  I'm running Windows 7 64 bit.

 

Everything's been working for a long time with the usual bugs (Virus and stuff).  You guys have fixed all of my problems and I can't give you enough praise.

 

My problem:  for a while now, my memory usage creeps up during the day, even if I'm using the system lightly.  If I restart the system in the morning I have about 2.5 GB being used.  At the end of the day it has creeped up to about 7 GB or even more.  This is without loading any programs other than the ones I have loaded.  I do have a lot of tabs open on Chrome, Firefox and I am using real time stock program for trading.  This is a pretty accurate description as I see it.

 

I can also run the hardware diag tool that was supplied with the system to do a memory check (non-destructive) and after the check the task manager is back at 2 GB.  Needless to say this is bothersome since my system slows down.

First, that RAM memory of 9GB, seems a strange figure, usually it is two's fours, or eight, as in equal not odd numbers unless you have an odd stick in of only one GB.

 

if you are running Firefox, which version are you using, click Help, then About Firefox, it will tell you which version, which should be 31.0 and you can also click Update to update Firefox.

Older versions have been known to incrementally increase use of RAM memory while the browser is open. Even the up to date version can use up to 400 MB after running for some time. I do know also that Chrome can be a bit of a hog too.

 

You can also monitor the memory use in Task manager which will tell you which program or process is using the most RAM memory. Click the start orb, and then in the search panel type Task Manager, click on View running processes with Task Manager. once opened click the Processes tab. Anything using a large amount will show there.

If anything shows as using a lot that you can't understand what it is, let us know please.

Just fyi.   The MB is a X58 Chipset and has Triple channel slots (2 banks of 3) as against your normal Duel channel slots.   Alll slots in any bank must be ocupied.   YHou can have,

3 x 1GB stick in bank A = 3GB.

6 x 1GB sticks in banks A & B = 6GB

or any combination up to 6 x 4GB stick in banks A & B = 24GB

Image, should read, 3 x 1GB Sticks in the black, and 3 X 2GB sticks in the yellow.

Hello Rich!

If your using W7, type Resmon in the search bar. It will show you what programs are using the memory,ect!(Resourse Monitor)

Run some On Demand virus scanners, Malwarebytes > http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/malwarebytes_anti_malware.html  and ClamWin Portable > http://portableapps....lamwin_portable  If anything found, recommend a visit to our virus removal  experts. 

 

The ResMon is a great tool, try running Windows Reliability tool as well, if you know aprox when the issue started, you may be able to find the event that is causing it.  > http://www.makeuseof...bility-monitor/

I'm already using mbam with premium license, auto scan and auto update so that's not a problem.  

 

As I look over a print out from when memory is 2.5GB compared to 7 GB I see nothing unusual, just seems that I have a lot of tabs open in both Chrome and Firefox.  Right now I have 15 tabs open in Chrome and 35 in Firefox.  I need to have those tabs open for stock research that I do and charts which are loaded on Firefox.  

 

Geez, when I actually say the number of tabs on each browser that are open it kind of sounds like a world record.  I'm probably just using the browsers to the max and more and more processes need to be created.

 

What does everyone think?  Now that sounds like an obvious question...

 

Let me know, and thanks for the heads up on the reliability monitor, which by the way is doing fine.  The system has no applications or system programs that are crashing and the reliability is around 7.5-8.0 I would guess.

You've a way to go, 100+ is not unusual.   You might look at what programs are running in the background, also starting with windows, you may be able to free up memory there.

Check your browser extensions, disable/remove unnecessary ones.

If you think it worth the $$, you could swap out the 3 x 1GB stick for 3 x 2GB ones.

So I agree since I've picked your brains that I don't have any problems.  I don't mind running the memory test every morning which brings me down to 2.5GB usage of RAM.  It only takes 5 minutes or so.

 

That's what I'll do and try to get some bucks to swap out the 1GB sticks for 2GB sticks.
