Could you try the following from the reatogo run box :

1.Click Start, click Run, type c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spuninst.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.
2.When the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Removal Wizard starts, click Next.
3.Follow the instructions on the screen to remove Windows XP SP3.

OK the service pack is not fully installed. Did it reboot properly after completing the service pack install or did this occur in the final stages

it said it finished and then rebooted and that is when it started.  Do you know of a site to download sp3.  Microsoft doesn't sevice that any more, so I found a web site that I downloaded it from and maybe it wasn't complete?

This is the MS link http://www.microsoft...ails.aspx?id=24 using any other can be fraught with danger

Your best bet would be to slipstream this with your CD and then do a repair install http://winsupersite....ck-3-sp3-128464

Yes that is an option, have you considered getting a backup programme ? Especially as MS has now removed support from XP

What do you mean by "backup programme?"  When I chose "R" it takes me to a command prompt.  Don't know where to go from there

We have a repair tutorial here http://www.geekstogo...air-windows-xp/

For a backup programme I mean something like Macrium Reflect. This will image your drive to an external source USB/External drive/CD enabling the system to be restored in minutes if you have a catastrophic failure

If this computer is just used by a child for games and etc on internet, how important is sp3 if it still doesn't work after I try the install from microsoft.  Could I just use it with sp2?
