RAM problem

I got a 256 Ram Module for Gateway E3400. Took out 128 Module, installed 256 module, and computer will not boot up. It acts as if no RAM is installed. I put the 128 back in and it works . I have tried two different 256 modules with no luck.
Modules are seated correctly.

have you checked the max ram your unit will recognize?
possible BIOS update from gateway?
is the ram the correct ram according to the mfg specs?
