I am considering downloading, installing and running Linux Mint through a Windows Installer. However I I am not so sure if this is such a safe idea.

 

Upon searching I realize that at the moment there is only an option to do this for Ubuntu and Linux Mint.

 

However also upon searching I discovered some people now saying that the Wubi which is the option for Ubuntu is no longer recommended as a safe option. And by that I was wondering the same about Mint4win which is the option for Linux Mint. But what I read could be just opinions by non-experienced users.

 

so I am posting here, asking for your opinions about this as I feel more likely to get good expert advice.

Ubuntu still supports Wubi and from what I know it works as a normal install except for the suspend to disk feature, which doesn't work.

 

What do you mean by not "safe"? Are you worried it'll get infected by viruses?  Could you share a link where such a thing was stated?

 

If you just want to take a look at mint/ubuntu I would recommend a live-disk or a virtual machine. That way you can easily remove it again, if you don't like it and you can more easily try multiple distros before settling on one.

I can't remember now exactly as it was a while ago but I thought I read somewhere online people saying they stopped it due to system issues.

 

I had done this before and wanted to do it again but was having difficulty finding the link. However when I clicked a link to the Uubuntu Windows Installer page it basically shows an option to download the desktop. Anyway I will try downloading and installing that again and see what happens. http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop is the page I get sent to upon following the guide here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wubi

 

Furthermore the Mint4Win that I also tried to do did not work any more which it had done before. This time this just stopped installing half way through and didn't do any more. When I tried to reinstall it said it was already installed and that I had to uninstall first. Also rebooting didn't prove to do anything either. I had to do this though with Virtual clone Drive in regards to Linux Mint. I am also wondering if I could or should also try and do the same with Ubuntu.
